Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Nicole Newsome.
Hi Dr. Nicole, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
How I Made It to This Point in My Life
When I look back over my life, I realize that every challenge, every setback, every victory, and every lesson has shaped the woman I am today. My journey has not been easy, but it has been meaningful. I stand here today not because life has always been fair, but because I refused to give up.
I have always believed that education has the power to transform lives. That belief led me to dedicate my career to serving students, teachers, and families. I began my journey in education with a heart to make a difference, and over the years I embraced every opportunity to learn, grow, and lead. From working directly with students to becoming a middle school assistant principal, every position prepared me for greater responsibility and a greater purpose.
Leadership has taught me that success is not measured only by titles or accomplishments. It is measured by the lives we impact. I have spent countless hours coaching teachers, supporting struggling students, celebrating achievements, solving problems, and creating environments where everyone has the opportunity to succeed. Those experiences have strengthened my character and reminded me that true leadership is rooted in service.
My personal life has also shaped who I am. I have experienced seasons filled with joy and seasons marked by heartbreak, uncertainty, and difficult decisions. There were moments when I questioned how I would make it through. Yet every obstacle became an opportunity to grow stronger. My faith became my anchor, reminding me that even when I could not see the path ahead, God was directing my steps.
Family has always been one of my greatest blessings. As a wife, mother, grandmother, and caregiver, I have learned the importance of unconditional love, sacrifice, patience, and resilience. Caring for those I love has deepened my compassion and strengthened my determination to build a legacy that extends beyond my own success.
One of the greatest lessons I have learned is that pain does not have to define us. Instead, it can refine us. Every disappointment taught me perseverance. Every failure taught me humility. Every success reminded me to remain grateful. Every closed door redirected me toward something greater.
Earning advanced degrees, becoming an educational leader, and fulfilling my dream of becoming an author were not accomplishments that happened overnight. They were built through years of hard work, sleepless nights, determination, and an unwavering commitment to never stop growing. I learned that dreams require discipline, and purpose requires persistence.
Today, I continue to dream. I envision opening my own counseling and wellness center where individuals can find healing, hope, and restoration. I continue to build businesses that serve others, write books that encourage resilience, and create opportunities that empower families, educators, and communities. Everything I pursue is rooted in my desire to leave people better than I found them.
If my life teaches anything, I hope it reminds others that your beginning does not determine your ending. Life will test your strength, challenge your faith, and stretch your endurance. There will be moments when quitting seems easier than continuing. But if you keep believing, keep working, and keep trusting God through every season, you will discover that your greatest victories often come after your hardest battles.
I have made it to this point because I chose faith over fear, perseverance over defeat, purpose over comfort, and hope over despair. My story is still being written, and I believe my greatest chapters are still ahead. Every experience has prepared me for the next assignment, and I am committed to using my life to inspire others to rise again, embrace new beginnings, and never stop believing in what is possible.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are moments in life that change us forever. Some come as celebrations, while others arrive carrying unimaginable pain. My journey has been marked by both. If you looked at where I am today, you might see an educational leader, an author, a wife, a mother, and a woman of faith. What you may not immediately see are the tears, the prayers, and the countless moments when I wondered how I would find the strength to keep moving forward.
One of the greatest burdens I have carried has been the overwhelming loss of my family. Between 2019 and 2024, I experienced what no one ever imagines enduring. Year after year, I said goodbye to six of my siblings. Before I could fully grieve one loss, another would come. Each phone call brought fear. Each funeral left another empty chair and another piece of my heart missing. There were days when the weight of grief seemed unbearable, and I questioned how one family could endure so much heartbreak in such a short period of time.
As if that pain were not enough, I also faced the heartbreaking loss of my parents. Losing the people who first loved, protected, and believed in me left a void that words can hardly describe. No matter how old we become, there is something about losing your parents that changes you forever. Their absence became a reminder that life is fragile, that tomorrow is never promised, and that every moment with the people we love is a gift.
Then came another devastating chapter. My husband—the man who has stood beside me through life’s victories and valleys—was diagnosed with colon cancer. Watching someone you love fight for their life is one of the most helpless experiences imaginable. There were days filled with uncertainty, doctor’s appointments, treatments, fear, and prayers. I learned what it truly means to be strong when you don’t feel strong. I learned how to smile through tears, to hold on to faith when answers were scarce, and to find hope even on the darkest days. His battle became our battle, reminding us that love is not simply expressed during life’s celebrations but is proven through unwavering commitment during life’s greatest trials.
At the same time, life called me to another unexpected assignment. I became a full-time caregiver to my twin nieces and my great-niece and great-nephew. While many people might have seen another obstacle, I saw children who needed stability, love, guidance, and hope. The responsibility was enormous. There were moments of exhaustion, uncertainty, and sacrifice. Balancing my career, my family, my husband’s health, and the emotional needs of children who depended on me often stretched me beyond what I thought I could endure. Yet those children became another reason to keep moving forward. They reminded me that sometimes our greatest purpose is found in showing up for others, even when our own hearts are hurting.
There were many nights when I cried after everyone else had gone to sleep. There were mornings when I got dressed, went to work, encouraged teachers, inspired students, and led with confidence while quietly carrying grief that few people knew existed. I discovered that strength is not the absence of pain; strength is choosing to continue despite it.
These experiences have changed me. They have made me more compassionate, more patient, and more intentional. They have deepened my faith and strengthened my belief that even in the middle of unimaginable loss, God is still present. I may never understand why so much sorrow found its way into my life, but I have chosen not to let grief have the final word.
Today, I carry the memories of my parents and siblings with me. I continue to stand beside my husband in his fight. I continue to pour love into the children God has entrusted to my care. Every step I take honors those I have lost and those I continue to fight for.
My story is not one of a woman who escaped hardship. It is the story of a woman who walked through it, leaned on her faith, and refused to let heartbreak define her future. Every scar I carry is evidence not only of what I have endured, but of the grace that has carried me through. If my journey can remind even one person that hope still exists after heartbreak, then every chapter of my story has a purpose.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As an Assistant Principal in one of the best districts in Houston Texas, I serve as an instructional leader, coach, mentor, and advocate for students, teachers, and families. My primary responsibility is to ensure that every student has access to a safe, supportive, and academically challenging learning environment where they can thrive. I collaborate with teachers to improve instructional practices through classroom observations, data analysis, professional learning, and individualized coaching that focuses on student achievement.
I specialize in instructional leadership, data-driven decision-making, school improvement planning, teacher development, and building positive campus culture. I have extensive experience supporting curriculum implementation, analyzing student performance data, facilitating professional development, conducting T-TESS evaluations, leading professional learning communities (PLCs), coordinating campus operations, and implementing systems that improve both teaching and learning. I believe that strong relationships are the foundation of successful schools, and I intentionally work to build trust with students, staff, parents, and community members.
I am known for leading with integrity, compassion, consistency, and high expectations. My colleagues know me as someone who is approachable, dependable, and solutions-oriented. I strive to create an environment where teachers feel supported, students feel valued, and families know their voices matter. Whether I am coaching a new teacher, supporting a student through challenges, or leading campus initiatives, I approach every situation with empathy and a commitment to excellence.
What I am most proud of is the positive impact I have had on the lives of students and educators. Seeing struggling students gain confidence, watching teachers grow into exceptional instructional leaders, and helping create a school culture where everyone feels seen and supported are the accomplishments that mean the most to me. While improved academic outcomes are important, I believe my greatest success is helping people recognize their own potential and empowering them to achieve it.
What sets me apart is my ability to balance accountability with genuine care for people. I believe that leadership is about serving others, listening with intention, making informed decisions, and inspiring those around you to become the best version of themselves. My leadership is grounded in collaboration, resilience, and continuous improvement. I am committed to fostering excellence while ensuring that every decision is made with students’ best interests at the center.
For me, being an Assistant Principal is more than a profession—it is a calling. Every day, I have the opportunity to influence lives, strengthen educational practices, and help build a brighter future for students, educators, and the communities we serve.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
