Check Out Elizabeth Penland’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Penland.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Sonny Cinematics Initially began as a Angus Penland Videography, but after my husband and I lost our pup Sonny we decided to rebrand in order to honor his memory. Sonny meant a lot to both of us, but especially my husband Angus. Before we had met Sonny was his grandfather’s dog. The two of them would do everything together, his grandfather loved that dog more than anything, and after he passed Angus vowed to look after him. Growing up Angus had always had a passion for filmmaking and received mixed emotions from family members about this decision. Some saying that it would be a nice hobby but nothing else while others disregarded him entirely. His grandfather was one of the few family members that encouraged him to chase his dreams. So in a way Sonny Cinematics is not only a way for us to honor Sonny but Angus’ grandfather as well. We dedicated ourselves to becoming a husband and wife team that would make any person’s wedding special. Since Sonny Cinematics creation we have done multiple weddings, events and photo shoots. Now we’ve begun to branch out and create original short films under the Sonny Cinematics Production brand. We are very proud of where we have come and are excited to see where we will go.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
We started in 2020 and along the way we both had to learn the fundamentals of videography. Angus had been taught through a work study program but had never had proper training. As for myself I had never really picked up a camera until I met Angus, but with his guidance and experience we’ve been able to teach ourselves the ropes and stand amongst other great videographers.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
We specialize in weddings, and we are known for our compassionate take on videography. We pride ourselves on being active members of the process and ensuring our clients get the most out of the service we provide. Recently we have begun to dabble in short film work and started creating original works of art for the world to enjoy.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
When we started out Angus’ mother Shannon Penland was a huge inspiration and helped push us along our path. In addition to her we have these individuals to thank:

Monte Darland – Head of MMS at Lonestar College Tomball. Without him we wouldn’t know the first thing about videography or editing.

Steven Romero Jr. – We have worked with Steven many times throughout the years and he always pushes us to be our best. Whether its a film set or a professional client setting Steven is there through thick and thin.

MarcAnthony McGathon – Marc is an amazing individual and an even more talented artist. When we need something color graded or shot we go to him. We are honored to have him in our life and on our team.

Kazai Drew – When we began offering photography services she provided the means necessary for us to do so. We thank her innovation and spirit.

Euriz Malave – Euriz is Angus’ step mother who has worked in the industry for many years, she gave us important pointers and tips to help improve our system as well as our craft.

Mitzi Reeder – Mitzi is my grandmother and she pushed us to keep going when things got rough. Anytime we create something she is there to assure us how good of a job we do.

Jake Jones – Jake is Angus’ best friend and has played a crucial role in many of the creative short film projects that we have done. From acting in them to providing sufficient places to film and even buying lunch he is one of our biggest supporters and dearest friends.

Katelyn Holland – Katelyn is my best friend and her wedding was the very first one we filmed. She was willing to be our guinea pig and has always been there by my side through thick and thin.
