Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Gillen.
Hi Emily, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started The Slumber Party Club when my oldest daughter was turning 8. She wanted to have her very first slumber party. We had hard wood floors and not enough beds. I wanted something cute and fun for the girls to remember. I remember seeing little teepees on Pinterest and quickly thought what a great business this would be. I worked quickly and made a magical setup for her! I was a teacher and needed the extra income so I decided to launch this business idea for our area. The closest other business was about 2 hours away so I knew this could be a hit. We are now starting our 7th year and have been able to create memories for thousands of kids across the Houston area.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not! Covid hit the year after we launched and no one was doing slumber parties. Once they started closing schools and businesses we started getting call after call cancelling slumber parties. We had 27 cancellations in one day. We had to get creative and were able to do door drop
off slumber parties for siblings and virtual slumber parties. Friends could have setups in their own home and so friends could zoom and still have fun in our tents.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have been a teacher for 17 years, a mom and now a business owner! I have learned to be creative and listen to what kids want and be able to make this budget friendly for families in our city. We care for our customers and can customize exactly what their child would like!
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite memory was having my cousins sleepover and we would play games, make tents in the living room using blankets and chairs and anything else we could find. We would stay up late giggling and telling stories.
