Today we’d like to introduce you to Erika Bomar.
Hi Erika, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
After working at a nursing home for 9 years, I started to experiment with resin and learning how to make things as an escape from the stress Covid 19 brought to the healthcare field. I enjoyed arts and crafts since I was little. After some time, I decided I wanted to start my own business and sell my art. Thanks to the support of my family, I was able to dedicate all my time to grow my business and quit my 9-5 job. As my business has continue to grow, I have been learning to make new products with an opportune to go to West Houston Community College to their Maker space. Where I learned how to do sublimation, laser cutting, and engraving. Due to that opportunity, I was able to expand my business to the next level. I always wanted to have my own business but never knew what to do, but I decided that since arts and crafts make me happy, I needed to take this adventure and see where it takes me. I also love the smiles my products bring to my customers or spectators. I have always loved helping people, and my products help people to have a brighter day.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Some of the challenges I have faced are finding what kind of products I wanted to make and how I wanted to design them, all the way to finding what markets are best for me and my brand and which markets I should stay away from. I also find that social media is not my strength, and I am trying to learn more.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
A little about me, I was born and raised in Argentina, Buenos Aires. I came to the USA when I was 13. While I was in high school, I was given a scholarship to go to Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, where I learned Metal Smith and Pottery. That helped me to never stop making crafts and continue to explore other areas of craftsmanship. After a few years, I discovered the art of resin, and I started to learn how to make items with it. I love working with this material; the ideas are endless. I am known for doing products that are cute and refreshing; they make the customers smile and very happy to purchase them.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was very creative with everything I was involved in. I remember I would invent new games with their rules. I was a little of a troublemaker. I loved to draw and paint to the point that I got in trouble for painting a mural in my room with crayons and my mom’s nail polish. My father decided to buy me more notebooks and coloring books to keep me away from the walls, that only helped for a while; I did warn you I was a little of a troublemaker. Throughout the years, I was always making something, either decorations or jewelry to gift to my friends and family. I loved to see them smile when they received something I had made. Since I was little, I was and still am the kind of person that wants to make sure everyone is happy and treated with respect.
