Check Out Garlan Dougharty’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Garlan Dougharty.

Garlan Dougharty

Hi Garlan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m originally from Bay City, Texas; I’ve always been drawn to creating Art and Music. My parents bought me a recording software when I was about 16. I produced my first album in 2011 though it’s not out anywhere I had a long way to go from there. I went on to create my album “Time Flys” in 2013, which I would describe the genre as electronic pop punk, close to Hyperpop these days. I then moved to Houston for college and work in the electrical field, got married, and started a family. I never stopped doing what I love and always integrate my passions into my life. In 2017, I started writing music again and wanted to actually perform my songs for people and see if I could bring entertainment to places. I was unsuccessful in the beginning with finding band members being new to the scene in Houston. So, I designed and built my own double-neck guitar with my signature eyeballs carved into the headstocks. I also bought a looper pedal and started figuring out how to perform full versions of my songs and covers as a solo act. I then released my debut album, “Found this Blue Wall,” in 2022, harnessing a more established sound and less processed vocals. paired with my half guitar half, bass I create the funky pop vibes from the album switching between riffs, bass lines, and lead guitar licks to create a full emersion of each song from one performer. Though nothing beats a live band backing you up, so l I do play shows with other band mates at times. Eventually, I hope to find musicians who like my style enough to want to be in my band. Until then, though, I’ll be doing my live funky looping. I have another album in the works and another double-neck guitar as well. So, stay tuned in and follow me on the socials to get all the latest scoop on cool stuff I’m working on.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I haven’t had any “hardships.” However, maintaining a healthy balance with a growing family at home, plus making music and playing live when I’m able, can be a challenge at times. I’m happy to have a family that supports my music, and I am excited to see my kids showing interest in learning alongside me, too. I’m a big advocate for not giving up on your passions or dream just because you have a family. I want my kids to see that and be a part of it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I work as a Journeyman electrician in Houston. I work on new installs and troubleshooting existing electrical systems, usually in industrial or commercial settings. I’ve also worked in the traffic department building intersections in and around Houston and servicing the intersections along the Houston metro rail.

I also make art and do commissions on the side. I do a wide range of art styles. pencil, sculptures, woodworking, resin, painting, etc. Regular graphite pencil drawing is my favorite.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
I learned to take advantage of the time I have with my family and friends and not to take anything for granted. Life is so much better when I take the upsides and appreciate the good things. And make the most of my time here in life.
