Today we’d like to introduce you to Gregory Simien.
Hi Gregory, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was raised on a cattle ranch in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Oldest of 5 kids in a family of 7 . I was homeschooled along with the rest of my siblings. We were heavily involved in church my dad was a pastor for most of my teenage years. This is where my music journey began. My first instrument was drums, then Bass, guitar and piano. All self-taught. I came to Houston in 2015 for a visit with some family, fell in love with the city and I’ve been here ever since.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
When I was a child, I suffered with severe migraines caused by scoliosis. After Visits to the chiropractor, along with a specific training and rehabilitation routine and prayer I was able to improve my condition, and all alleviate the migraines.
Another struggle in my early 20s so with social anxiety. I grew up in a small town with a small community on top of being homeschooled. I would force myself to go places alone and just socialize. Through this process, I learned that meeting new people is one of the most rewarding things in our human experience.
Since I’ve been in Houston,
My truck was stolen twice including one failed attempt. It was broken into twice. By some miracle, I recover the truck both times.
One of my biggest struggles has been finding a career that allows me enough time, money and energy to dedicate to music and being creative. This is the story of many talented artist that I know. I don’t have it all figured out. . I’m still trying to find my way.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am currently an area field manager with U-Haul company for downtown Houston. I just made 10 years in this role. My primary role is to prospect, recruit, and support independent small business partners to grow and manage a profitable network of U-Haul dealerships. Over the years this role has done a great job of helping me to learn and connect to the city. And see lots of the good as well as lots of the not so good.
People also know me as a chef (not professionally)
Along the way I have done music part time doing both studio work and live performances. Since I’ve been in Houston some of the people I’ve worked with are Sean David, Sean Ardoin, Greathouse, DJ Chose, David Michael Wyatt, Brendalynn McKinney, Just to name a few.
I earned a Grammy nomination for song writing with Sean Ardoin.
The people who are close to me know me as a level headed easy going guy who rolls with the punches but always will keep things in perspective
I am most proud of knowing that people see me as a trustworthy and dependable person.
What usually sets me apart from others is my perspective. Most conversations that I’m involved in, people will tell me “I’ve never thought of it like that.”
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Tough to say one favorite, but driving down to Cameron, Louisiana and fishing, riding dirt bikes/skateboarding with my neighbors, and playing video games with cousins all in the same room on a small TV.
