Check Out Gustavo Melendez Castro’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gustavo Melendez Castro.

Hi Gustavo, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started cutting my little brother’s and my own hair out of necessity at the age of 16. I couldn’t afford to keep a fresh cut, and the only good barbershop in town did walk-ins only at the time, so sometimes the wait could be up to 5 hours. Once a couple of my friends saw that I was handy with the clippers, they trusted me with doing simple haircuts on them. That’s where my passion stemmed from. I loved the challenge and the gratitude. Helping someone feel confident, boosting self-esteem, and offering a safe place in my chair, has humbled me and helped mold the man I am today.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The whole process and journey has been an obstacle. When we migrated to this country, I was only five, and my parents had dreams of me becoming a lawyer or doctor. Something that would guarantee the family tree wouldn’t have to go back to man the fields and I herd goats for a living. Haircuts never being a necessity to my family, my familia was my biggest deterrent for pursuing a career in barbering. Add moving to Houston, where I had no clients or connections, I didn’t have a firm foundation to step upon.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a professional barber specializing in blurry fades and designs. I’m most proud of the relationships that I hold with my clients. Ensuring that the look they envision themselves with is met, I not only hope to help you look your best but feel your best, educating in everything I’m train in.
