Check Out Jahmilah Tyson’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jahmilah Tyson.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My experience with photography began in high school. I took it to fulfill my requirements for the fine arts credit. Learning the different aspects and completing each of the different projects taught me that I had a hidden talent. It afforded me the opportunity to show my creative side. I started my business in 2019. I am constantly studying and growing as a photographer and I’m always thinking of the next creative thing. Getting to where I am today has not been easy. Growing my relationship with God and stay connected to my church has helped me to persevere.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. To say that it has been easy would be a lie. I have had to discover my value and learn to own it. I also have to remind myself that I determine my value and not other people. I have learned not to compare myself to others because we all have our own process. I must trust my own. I have wanted to quit several times, but the main thing that has helped me is my relationship and trust in God. Zechariah 4:10 says not to despise small beginnings and that is one of the things that I meditate on. My small beginning could last for years, but I am able to learn and grow tremendously in this part of my process. I have to make sure have the right perspective throughout. Listening and implementing to my pastor’s teaching multiple times a week and constantly being reminded to keep God first has helped me to endure the bumpy road.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a photographer. I love creating an experience with each of my clients from start to finish. Our first conversation is to decide whether or not I can fulfill the vision for their final product. Once we agree to work together, we then discuss the ideas for their shoot. Choosing the best location, outfits, and poses is important. I make sure to take notes during our conversation to make sure that on the day of their shoot, it is completely stress free. I want them to leave their shoot feeling satisfied and wanting to return for another experience along with their friends and family.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
I think it’s important to know that others do not define your value, you do. When you are confident and own your abilities and believe in yourself, it will cause those around you to do the same. Own your craft. You wear what you believe. If you believe that you are the best, others will see it. It will pour out into your work and how you carry yourself. Another important thing to know is that you have to extend your reach outside of your friends and family. You can’t rely on them to give you the exposure that you desire. This requires you to step outside of your comfort zone. NEVER sell yourself short.
