Today we’d like to introduce you to Janice.
Hi Janice, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in New York City, and my creative journey began in 2015 when my dad gifted me my first camera. At the time, I dreamed of becoming a YouTuber, like so many creatives of that era, but that camera quietly opened the door to a deeper passion. By 2017, I was photographing events and high school graduation portraits, even documenting my own final days of high school—images I still treasure today. Life took me across states in the years that followed, and during that season I stepped away from photography while navigating personal and mental health challenges.
Everything shifted in early 2024 when I became pregnant with my daughter. After experiencing loss and later receiving a life-altering prenatal diagnosis, my husband and I made the faith-filled decision to relocate to Houston in search of specialized medical care. That move changed everything. Houston not only provided my daughter with the care she needs, but it also gave me the space to reclaim my creativity and step fully into this season of life.
Today, I am a full-time stay-at-home mom, content creator, and photographer. While I photograph a wide range of moments—from families and graduations to maternity, engagements, and proposals—I’ve recently found a deep love for branding and food photography for businesses. Becoming a mother has reshaped how I see photography; it’s no longer just about creating beautiful images, but about preserving joy, stories, and memories that deserve to be held onto forever. My faith continues to be my foundation, and my work is a reflection of resilience, gratitude, and the beauty found in every season.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Much of my journey has involved navigating anxiety and depression while trying to find my footing creatively and personally. There were seasons where my mental health made it difficult to create, to stay consistent, or even to recognize my own potential. Moving from New York to much smaller, more isolated environments was especially challenging, and for a time, I felt disconnected from both myself and my work.
Coming to Houston marked a turning point. Being in a large, diverse, and welcoming city brought a sense of familiarity and belonging that I didn’t realize I had been missing. Paired with intentional healing and a renewed sense of purpose through motherhood and creativity, I am now in the healthiest mental space I’ve ever been in. Those struggles shaped me, but they no longer define me—and I carry them with gratitude for the growth and clarity they brought.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
