Today we’d like to introduce you to Jayvion Floyd
Hi Jayvion, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My passion for massage therapy began after a life-changing experience with my grandfather, Joseph Registe. He suffered a devastating fall in St. Thomas, breaking multiple bones, and came to live with my family in Houston for rehabilitation. I took an active role in his recovery, assisting my mom with caregiving and closely observing his mobile physical therapist. I was fascinated by how massage and movement therapy helped him regain mobility, and I applied what I learned to support his progress. Witnessing his transformation sparked my passion for healing through touch. That realization led me to enroll at the Houston School of Massage Therapy, where I began my journey as a massage therapist.
But after working in the industry, I saw how disconnected people of color were from this kind of wellness. What started as an endless curiosity turned into a mission—to create real solutions that help people take charge of their self-care. As a licensed massage therapist trained under expert physical therapists, I saw firsthand how massage could be transformative, not just for pain relief but for emotional and physical healing.
Now, my practice exists to break down barriers—making the benefits of massage therapy accessible, inclusive, and designed for people of color, who are often underrepresented in the wellness industry.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The process of becoming a massage therapist wasn’t too difficult, especially since I’m passionate about the field and see myself doing this long-term. However, working for myself came with its own challenges. One of the hardest parts has been building the structure and discipline needed to stay consistent without the framework of a traditional job. Taking those small steps every day to add something of value to myself and my business had been difficult but so very rewarding. Another personal struggle has been networking and making connections within my industry. I’ve always dealt with social anxiety, which made initiating conversations difficult. But by continuously pushing myself into uncomfortable situations, I’ve grown more confident and improved in this area.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a massage therapist specializing in sports therapy, with a growing focus on relaxation techniques. With my clients, I strive to create a safe and comfortable space—whether in their home or my office—where we can work together to find the root cause of their pain. Through a series of personalized assessments, I identify underlying issues and provide targeted care using massage therapy and corrective exercises tailored to their unique needs. My goal is not just to relieve pain but to empower clients with tools and knowledge that support their overall well-being. I started my own practice with the primary goal of making massage therapy more accessible to people of color (POC). One way I work toward this goal is by offering a reduced-rate service at $1 per minute, prioritizing support for the POC community. Additionally, I’ve started a workshop that guides partners through a massage sequence, creating a low-cost, community-centered way to experience the benefits of massage. Hosting my first version of this workshop on Valentine’s Day weekend was a major success and one of my proudest accomplishments since starting my practice. After this success I plan to now host this workshop every other Sunday and I am beyond excited to see how far this can continue to grow.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I see risk-taking as stepping outside of your comfort zone and investing your time and energy into something that you can only envision through faith. One of the biggest risks I’ve taken was stepping away from a stable, well-paying job to start my own massage therapy practice. I chose to pursue a vision of making massage therapy more accessible to people of color, a goal that feels ambitious but deeply necessary. This path has been challenging—especially as a Black person in a field where we are underrepresented—but I believe in the impact I can make. Taking this leap means betting on myself and my ability to create change, even when the path isn’t clear. I think meaningful growth often requires risk, and while it’s intimidating, it’s also a testament to my commitment to my community and my passion for this work.
