Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Bugarin.
Hi Jessica, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
As a stay at home mom, I always felt the need to contribute financially, After a couple of other ventures didn’t work out I stumbled upon some cookie decorating videos. I entered YouTube academy for cookie decorating and started practicing and making cookies for family events. Some attempts were fails and some were successful. When friends started placing orders more steadily, I decided to create a Facebook and Instagram business page in 2019. I’m so thankful for friends and family who believed in me and trusted me with cookies for their special occasions. I’m also very thankful for every one of my customers. I truly enjoy seeing the smiles on their faces when they see the cookies I have decorated. To this day, I’m still learning new tips and tricks and practice has definitely made an improvement.
I did also introduce my twin sister into the cookie decorating world. She started Cooky for Cookies and More in Converse, TX. Her business was taking off and we loved sharing our cookie decorating experiences together. Sadly just recently she had to make a tough decision to say no more. After rolling dough over and over again, she suffered a shoulder injury that caused intense pain. She continues to support me and cheer me on though from 3 hours away.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. There were many times I doubted myself and wanted to give up. In the beginning, I was saying yes to almost all order requests and realized quickly how stressful that was. I see now how I let it take over my life and do regret the time it took me away from my family. I have learned to say no which has helped so much. I’m not perfect and am still learning to become more organized but I have regained control of my life again. I have learned not to compare myself to other cookie decorators. I have my own style of decorating and that’s what my customers want. I decorate at a slow pace and that’s okay. I know my limits now. Also, I learned to prioritize what’s important and cookies are not on top. I do love cookie decorating and continue improving on how to be a better business while being a mother, wife, daughter, sister and friend first.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a cookie decorator, there is some creativity required but not necessary. Inspiration can be found everywhere and there are so many tools available to help upgrade the quality of your work using less time. Knowing how to follow a recipe and not burn cookies is important in being a successful cookie decorator. Cookies should not only look good but taste good as well. That’s what keeps customers coming back. I enjoy bringing my customer’s vision to life in cookie form. Matching invitations and party themes is a fun challenge I accept with every order. What sets me apart from other cookiers is the variety of flavors I offer. I currently offer four different flavors on my regular menu: Vanilla Almond, Strawberry, Birthday Cake and Brownie Chocolate. There are a few seasonal flavors I’ll offer for holidays such as pumpkin spice or lemon blueberry.
