Today we’d like to introduce you to Jim Hudek.
Hi Jim, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was naturally drawn to making art which consisted primarily of drawing cartoons when I was younger. This was my primary interest until adulthood when i began to become aware of modern painters, etc. Along the way I have explored all types of mediums such as airbrush art, watercolor, etc. I painted abstract predominately until I became interested in collage about 15 yrs ago. I can’t tell people I’m just a painter or a sculptor or illustrator as I love to do it all. Presently I work with collage and mixed media on canvas and abstract painting.
Over the last 20 years, I have worked with various galleries and curated designer outlets both in Houston and the Dallas Design District area. Being retired offers me a lot of time to pursue my passion in whatever direction it takes me,
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The ups and downs of the economy are what affects the success of an artist for the most part. During the Covid period, my best retail galleries were affected, causing store closures, The only upside to it was that most people were home bound during Covid lockdowns and my online sales went up.
I tend to work mostly with interior designers and with that, styles and tastes change and that dictates what art I’m working on, Be it paintings, collage or mixed media, I work in many styles such as pop art and urban mixed media, collage designs and abstract painting.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I painted for many years, but in the last 15 or so years, I went in a different direction. I worked mostly with collage using magazines and other paper products. The only drawback to the fact that I’ve done so many different types of art is that I may not actually be known as a “painter” or collage artist. I love to do it all.
How do you think about luck?
I haven’t hit the lottery yet so I’m going to stick with being a not-so-starving artist. The reality is if you love what you do, the luck and success will come naturally. I’ve been able to thrive in the art world since retiring from from the airlines in 2018.
