Check Out Jodie Schrier’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jodie Schrier

Hi Jodie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My photography journey began years ago during my time in musical theatre. My background is in dance and theatre and I always enjoyed capturing great moments portrayed on the stage. Little did I know that one day my passion for photography would expand beyond theatre. It was 2020 when I decided to take this passion seriously. The world we had all known was taking on a deeper need for connection, encouragement, acceptance and hope. I knew there were stories to be told; stories of triumph, hardships, tenacity and joy. I wanted to uncover those stories in hopes of reminding people of the value and relevancy they still had. And it would be done thru the lens of my camera; all the while allowing people to simply talk. About anything! And thats when the magic happened…..they lingered long past the ‘session’ and had a new lightness in their voice. I like to think they left with newfound hope. Hope in this world, hope in their circumstances and certainly knowing they are valued.

My photography style reflects timeless warmth, inviting beauty, and a reflection of my client’s personality. I aim to create images that reflect the value of each person. Through my photography, I hope to bring light and positivity to those I photograph.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It was challenging for sure, primarily because I am self taught. Lots of youtube tutorials left me mostly confused and discouraged. But my passion remained so I pushed onward. I soon stumbled upon two wonderful professional photographers who took me under their wings as my mentors. Both had different styles and backgrounds, but both brought a wealth of education, experience, talent and patience!!! To this day these women still impact my growth in photography.

My other challenge is a lack of knowledge in social media platforms. Its a whole new knowledge base that I’ve had to learn on my own.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As previously mentioned, my background (for 50+ years) has been in dance and theatre. As a choreographer and instructor my goal was always keenly focused on creating a “feeling” that viewers would connect with. Photography was a natural fit for me and something I am passionate about. I not only see things from a “creative” viewpoint; but I also find inspiration for my sessions from very unique sources (i.e., a song, a beautiful flowing skirt, an unusual bridge, etc) and build “the scene” from there.

I am known for creating a space that immediately puts my clients at ease as well as bringing out their true personality very quickly. Even the most timid or apprehensive clients are made to feel very valued because I take a genuine interest in them and their own story, no matter the age!

I am most proud of my innate ability to connect with those who despise being in front of a camera…..particularly if they are self conscious for any reason. There is beauty in them and I LOVE bringing that out. If I had to choose a specific age group I enjoy the most, it would absolutely be over age 65. My goodness that generation is incredible for so many reasons. And yet they are the least likely to be celebrated. What am I most proud of?….What sets me apart from others?……that’s it. Celebrating the “forgotten”, the “overlooked”. I have always learned so much from my clients in their 70s, 80s and 90s and simply adore them.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Im a pilot’s kid, so we were fortunate to be able to travel quite a bit. My favorite childhood memories will always be the adventures we experienced with our family; whether it was skiing down mountains or behind a boat, hiking Devil’s Tower or cooking a roux in the deep south.
