Today we’d like to introduce you to John Tatu.
Hi John, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started tattooing in the 90’s. I’m now an award winning artist I started off right here in southeast Texas. I gradually drifted away from the area into more of the tattoo scene. Florida, California and New York were a lot more tattoo friendly in that time. The culture was more suited towards the industry. After years in the industry and traveling I eventually found myself cast on reality tattoo show and did that for a couple years. I was also doing the tattoo convention circuit. I have won several awards. For 12 or so years I’ve tattooed mainly Florida. After losing someone close to me I decided it was time to come back to Texas. After a few spots around the state I came home. I love what I do with a passion. I bring a diverse style to the area. I’ve met some wonderful people, some real friends here. Thanks to Gary Dunford for the opportunity to run an aspiring studio, Vudoo Tattoo
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’ve watched the industry go through some changes along the way. Some good and some not so good. But I’m here, this is what I’ll always do.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m an artist. I love to draw, paint, create. Above all I love to tattoo. I have a flair for realism. Black n grey or color. I’m most proudest of my daughters and my mom & dad (rip). What sets me apart is I care! Regardless of the tattoo I treat everyone the same. I want every tattoo to be done with the same amount of enthusiasm. I’ve won several awards at conventions all over.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Networking is so much different now. You have the internet where when I started you didn’t have all that. It’s a lot easier to network and touch bases with other artists. My advise, if you really love something then keep working towards that, head held high and stay focused.
