Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Rojas.
Hi Joseph, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
When you’re finished reading this, I’d like you to have a better understanding of who I am and why I love what I do. My goal is always to provide a great experience from start to finish, from our initial conversation to the final products being delivered. I want every client to be joyful from the experience and have that moment where they realize how beautiful, fierce, and strong they are. Experiencing someone view your work for the first time and give you that natural reaction, you see them light up, has always and will always be one of my biggest motivations. Growing up movies, music, arts, and creative works have always been a therapy and escape for me, and I hope I can do the same for others.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Trial and Error, however, it really started with learning to overcome my self-doubt and being able to take a risk and betting on me. For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted would tell anyone who would listen that I would create my own stories, that I would create those escapes, that I would create! It started with recording a movie review with my phone in a dark room, at an ugly angle, and making one of the worst things ever, to prove to myself I wanted nothing else. I kept making video after video, making small improvements, and finally signed up for a production class to get some more hands-on experience and to continue to build self-confidence. I met some amazing people, got to start creating with others, making short films, and music videos; we shot a couple of weddings, some advertisements, and much more. Wanting to better understand my camera and how to light, or what lighting changes on a subject, posing, framing, etc… I started getting into photography. Doing some research and attending YouTube University, I took off with anyone who was willing to be my test subject. Down the rabbit hole, I went when I landed on a specific type of photography that I grew to love. Boudoir, I’ve always loved the idea of capturing a moment for someone and them having this moment of realization that they’re beautiful, strong, powerful, and wonderful. The reason I fell in love with boudoir photography is for that fact and more, you get to see a client’s face light up when they see the final photos, and almost have this moment of “is that me?” and now I’ve been able to show them, that they are, sexy, fierce, powerful, beautiful, worthy. Being able to capture a moment for someone and to see their confidence grow on the spot, and either show them that they are those things and more or sometimes just let them reconnect with that realization. I love creating escapes with film like so many have for me, and I love being able to help someone see how amazing they truly are. Being okay with failing. Attempt after attempt has helped me continue to grow, which sounds funny; however, it’s the not giving up if something goes wrong or if someone says no; you can always learn from it and fix it, and you can always reach out to others. The skills you learn over time and through continuing to try, however, the thing that really keeps you going is passion, which is more essential than anything else in my opinion. The craziest thing, my biggest obstacle has been and at times still is, my own fear and my self-doubts, and I don’t think those will ever fully go away; however, because I love this and I know this is what I want to do every day for the rest of my life, I’m learning to ignore those thoughts, comments, and negativity. I believe you have to be the change you seek and through it all, progress not perfection.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in boudoir photography and have been lucky enough to have been published a few times now. I’m always proud to hear the reaction or moment they see themselves almost have that immediate confidence boost once they see themselves. The “Wow that’s me,” or “I look so fierce’ or “I’m so beautiful, sexy, and powerful” those moments always make me feel like I’m doing more than taking a picture.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
How to operate in crisis mode: I had just transitioned to full-time photographer, videographer, and realtor. Perfect timing, right? Things, even well-planned, organized, or set things can always hit the fan. I learned to stay prepared for drastic changes and how to change with them. I’ve always thought of myself as an optimistic person; however, that helped me learn to use that mindset and apply it to a small business. I took that time to hit YouTube University and learn as much more about my fields to better direct, pose, and discuss overall. Yes, it was a learning curve; however, I consider myself lucky to have survived, and I feel come out a bit stronger and better at what I love doing.
