Check Out Joshua Dean’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Dean.

Joshua, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I left the corporate world of sales/marketing in 2019 to chase this dream ( just before the Covid pandemic, great timing, right? ) My career in marketing, never really satisfied my artistic itch. So, I would regularly sneak my camera into the office and on my lunch breaks id go down to the streets and photograph everything I could. Before I knew it, photography was all I could think about. it completely consumed me. I spent every free moment studying the works of the greats like Ansel Adam’s, Bruce Gildan and Elliott Erwitt. I fell in love with the idea of street photography and had to become a part of it. In my process to develop my own style, it became clear to me what was missing the most in modern street photography, The human element. I wanted to set out and capture it.

Today, I’m a full-time street photographer, currently putting together my first book, which will be available in late summer and will showcase images from various homeless communities across some of our major cities.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not, but, it’s been worth it. Since setting out in 2019, we had the covid pandemic. 2020 was a difficult year for everyone, the way we approached everything changed. Including my wife’s pregnancy in 2020, which at the time had us locked down in the house. Now, under normal circumstances, its difficult enough to establish yourself as a professional artist, being shut indoors didn’t help. I used this time to set up a studio in my home and study lighting techniques.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a photographer. I like to think I specialize in capturing real moments of art in life. Creating art is a learning process that continues for your entire career and life. So, witnessing my own growth as an artist is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do and what I’m most proud of.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Houston is an amazing place to create! It’s an artists city. There is so much culture and vibrance in every direction. But, traffic is insane.
