Today we’d like to introduce you to Ben Workman.
Hi Ben, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m Ben Workman, also known as Jumper Maybach, the name that represents my artistic persona and process. My paintings are a bold successor to Abstract Expressionism, carrying the same fiery spirit that defined the truly American movement. Beyond the dynamism and movement, however, underlies the depth and the complexities of trauma and healing.
Each brushstroke and gesture on my canvas serves as a narrative, weaving together the threads of tragedy and triumph into a tapestry of vibrant hues. There’s a weightiness to them, yet a profound beauty that captivates the soul.
Growing up in the 1960s, navigating the complexities of the very conservative and intolerant environment of rural Texas laid the groundwork for my art – a visceral exploration of my innermost thoughts and emotions. I faced bullying, discrimination, and harassment for most of my childhood and adulthood until, finally, the Jumper persona emerged as the alter ego that unleashed my artistic side.
My art isn’t just a reflection of the world; it’s a call to action, a plea for a better tomorrow. It’s about embracing kindness and acceptance and choosing love over hate, even in the face of adversity.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My personal journey has been a journey of self-discovery and resilience. From facing discrimination to embracing my identity as Jumper Maybach, I’ve learned to channel my pain into something meaningful – a catalyst for healing and advocacy.
When I first emerged as Jumper, I became known around Houston as an artist-provocateur, challenging social norms in a defiant but loving way. While I no longer don the Jumper makeup, his spirit is still inside me and shows up in each painting. I hope to inspire others who learn about my path from pain to healing and ultimately to creating art that provides joy to the viewer.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m best known for my expressionistic paintings, which layer color and texture in dynamic and evocative patterns. I’ve most recently been recognized for my large-scale commissions in Washington, D.C. – both the diptych “Evening Star” and the polyptych 1900K, which required me to custom size 12 individual panels to fit into the curved rotunda of a Cesar Pelli building in the nation’s capital.
I’m also passionate about sharing the power of art with as many people as possible and have a licensed product line that is continuing to expand and grow. We have apparel, gorgeous scarves, a candle line, and coming soon, pet accessories! I show at art fairs and festivals around the country – this summer, you can find me at the Hamptons Art Fair and the Reno Tahoe International Art Fair.
