Check Out Karen Carter’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen Carter.

Hi Karen, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Infinite Hands Initiative: A Journey of Service and Hope
In 2010, while volunteering at shelters and community centers, Karen discovered the resilience of women striving to build small businesses to support their families. Each session left her inspired—and wishing she could do more. Over lunch one day with her prayer partner and best friend, Kathy Jones, the seeds of a greater mission were planted. Together, they organized a scholarship event for local students, bringing college representatives, city leaders, and even Mayor Bill White to the community. Vendors donated laptops and computers, ensuring students had the tools they needed to succeed. Against all odds, the event was a resounding success—proof that two dreamers over lunch could spark real change.

As Karen continued volunteering, two pressing needs weighed heavily on her heart. Mothers in shelters shared that their children, though attending school, lacked coats and warm clothing. At the community center, many Hispanic families desperately needed legal assistance but could not afford an attorney. These experiences became the foundation for what would soon become Infinite Hands Initiative.

Working in a law library, Karen filed the paperwork to establish a nonprofit dedicated to providing coats for children in shelters. The journey was not without doubt—waiting for IRS approval of the 501(c)(3) status was nerve-wracking—but her determination never wavered. On February 14, 2013, Infinite Hands Initiative was officially recognized, and the dream became reality. A volunteer board was formed, united by the commitment that no one would ever receive a salary; all efforts would go directly to serving children.

The first Koats4Kids distribution event was held at The Bridge Over Troubled Waters. Tables overflowed with coats of every size and color, along with gloves, caps, ponchos, and hygiene bags for mothers. The mission was clear: only new items would be distributed, and each event would feel like a shopping trip where children could choose their own coats. The joy on their faces—and the relief of their mothers—confirmed that Infinite Hands Initiative was doing exactly what was needed.
Over the past 13 years, Koats4Kids has provided thousands of children with new winter outerwear. With the support of partners like Bombas Giving Team (donating seven pairs of socks per child), Operation Warm, Big Star Cadillac/Hyundai of Friendswood, Macy’s Baybrook, Warby Parker Baybrook, Walmart, and countless individual and commuity donors the program has grown into a trusted source of warmth and dignity. Beyond protecting children from the cold, these coats help prevent illnesses and reduce the risk of influenza outbreaks in crowded shelters.

The Power of Community
While Infinite Hands Initiative was born from Karen’s vision, its success has always been a team effort. The organization is sustained by a dedicated board and volunteers who work tirelessly to ensure every distribution event runs smoothly. From setting up tables filled with coats and supplies to welcoming families with warmth and dignity, these individuals embody the heart of the mission.

Karen reflects, “I could not do this alone. Our board members are extraordinary, and I would not trade them for anything. Their commitment makes every event possible.” Together, this group has transformed Koats4Kids into more than a program—it is a movement of compassion, proving that when people unite for a common purpose, lasting change is possible.

For Karen, this work is more than a mission—it is a calling. Guided by faith and the words of Scripture, “Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to the least of these brothers of Mine, you did it to me,” she continues to lead Infinite Hands Initiative with compassion, resilience, and unwavering dedication.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The only obstacles we face is lack of funding this year is the worse ever. This is why Infinite Hands Initiative remains a small all volunteer organization where every dime can be directed to the mission of providing ever child living in a local shelter(s). The need outweighs the supply but we help who we can. This year it seemed like our funding would only supply new coats to the school age kids but much to my surprise our partner Operation Warm with the help of partner discounts made it possible to provide coats for every child at the shelter. Miracles do happen and this was our 2025 miracle for the these precious babies.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am retired and Infinite Hands Initiative is how I spend my time preparing for the next distribution event. I was employed at a law firm as a Librarian Assistant. This job gave me hands on learning and fed my hunger for research. It is safe to say my research ability is how I learned to complete all the necessary forms to set up a nonprofit. I would say research is where I shine.

I believe I am known for bringing like minded people together for a great cause and once you see the reaction of the kids and moms you just know it’s right.

I am most proud of my kids, grandkids and the team that supports me in every way. What sets me apart from others I must say is the heart of serving and giving. It’s a joy that is only experienced when you give to someone you may never see again and they can not repay you.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Risk-Taking is where prayer always comes into play for me. I don’t know what lies ahead but I know who does know so my first move is pray first and wait on an answer. I believe Koats4Kids is not my plan but God’s and since it’s His plan its also His bill. Every year since the first event I have wondered will we be able to provide and after a good heartfelt prayer I know something is going to happen. Trust and believe is how I handle risk-taking.
