Today we’d like to introduce you to Kemian Fry.
Hi Kemian, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hello! My name is Kemian Fry aka “Coach Kei” and I am the Founder/Head Coach of the Boss’d Up Step Company. I attended John Tyler High School in Tyler, Tx and graduated from The University of Texas at Tyler with a B.S. in Health Education.
I am a member of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., and an international award-winning choreographer & performer known for the dance genre of step & The S.L.A.B Blueprint©, a written curriculum that teaches the dance style of step through the use of science and mathematical principles.
I started my dance career at 8 years old, when I started training in the dance genres of hip hop and jazz. It wasn’t until I was in high school, at the age of 15, that I discovered stepping. With the training I received under my step coach, I became a varsity cheerleader as a junior in high school and spent 4 years as a competitive cheerleader between high school and college, while continuing to train and perfect my technique in the art of stepping.
I started my coaching career as a cheerleading coach in 2011 and transitioned over to coaching and choreographing for my first step team in 2013. Since then, I’ve been consistently teaching the dance styles of step and hip hop to youth and young adults ages 5-25, and I look forward to sharing my passion for giving young people the ability to express themselves in a positive manner.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
This journey has definitely not been easy. As a performer, I’ve dealt with numerous injuries, including broken bones, sprains, and pulled muscles, just to name a few.
As a coach, the main challenge I’ve dealt with is definitely the finances. I offer my training for a very low price, and even then, many of the students I serve come from low-income families that may sometimes have to choose between buying food to eat and paying for step/dance training. But, because I want ALL children to be able to experience to freedom that comes when performing on a stage, I often times make the sacrifice out of my own pocket to make sure that my student-athletes have the ability to continue to train and perform.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am most known for the dance genre of step. More specifically my unique beats and choreography that I come up with and teach my students. I am also known for creating the S.L.A.B Blueprint©, a written curriculum that teaches the dance style of step through the use of science and mathematical principles. The S.L.A.B Blueprint© teaches students how to use their bodies to create the movements and sounds that we call stepping and allows students to express themselves in a positive manner by using the art of stepping.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
All the credit goes to God. Starting the Boss’d Up Step Company was a HUGE faith move. After coaching others for over 10 years, I owe God the highest praise for allowing me to embark on this endeavor and to continue doing what I love to do.
