Today we’d like to introduce you to Kym Adams.
Hi Kym, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
After an extensive career in Administration Support in varying sectors around New Orleans, the time of evaluating future career endeavors led to the desire to open an extended service Copy Center, which would also include a Secretarial Support team. Thus…
The Business Team originally launched in New Orleans (under a different name) as a mobile clerical outsource supporting production teams, conventioneers and companies doing business in a city that makes it impossible to focus on business. Clientele evolved to include remarkable contractors who were talented but functioning without an admin or office team, which made business frustratingly difficult. The company was on a successful upswing almost at once, growing 300% in the first 2 1/2 years. Then…Hurricane Katrina.
Hello Houston, the land where business booms. After melding into the Corporate World in my new city for 13 years to recover financially from the devastating blow that Katrina was, learned were the responsibilities of managing and training project support teams around the globe in the OG&C industry. Understanding the innate competence of a well-versed support infrastructure, The Business Team was reborn, filling the gaps of expertise which many projects and small businesses encounter.
We have stayed committed to our original mission of minimizing the unique obstacles working in a remote environment brings, and the dreadful lessons the pandemic taught companies ill-prepared for remote working. Our platform supported many small businesses and firms during the pandemic with the ideal packages, which kept many afloat. The Business Team is growing to support traveling Executives in our operating cities, offering extended amenities beyond the hotel’s basic Business Center. The Business Team serves as your full-service business support resource when you are on the road. Whether relocating, expanding to a new city, involved in a one-time business event, or even as a caretaker for someone else…The Business Team offers a myriad of support options. We utilize resources local to each city, continually supporting small businesses first.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
What could possibly go wrong with a new business venture, right?
Hurricane Katrina, Evacuation/Relocation, Hurricane Harvey, a Global Pandemic, Travel Bans…
Challenges are going to happen. A great business plan and proven operating practices can survive it all. Commit loyalty to your mission, and flexibility to your journey.
Glitches happen. A great business plan and operating practices can survive it all. Commit loyalty to your mission, and flexibility to your journey.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My professional background runs industry gamut from hospitality to hospitals, non-profits to billion-dollar organizations. Always thriving in the background of companies with the desire to improve customer interactions and streamline efficiency brought out my analytical component in every job. Being a Mom helped me train others from the perspective of always wanting to see greatness in people…however “great” was defined by them.
Moving into leadership positions of many organizations led to opportunities to train and support others in their growth and professional journeys, sometimes with positive results, sometimes not so much. However, being the go-to solution resource brings me and the rest of The Team immense satisfaction. We each bring a minimum of 25 years corporate expertise in our areas of Specialty to every job and project. I am the Administrative Specialist, Mobile Notary, and Mediator of the Team. We also house a Procurement Specialist, a Training Specialist, an IT HelpDesk and Network Specialist, and a Quality Safety/Specialist. Projects and Businesses can utilize one or all of our services to meet their project needs.
Of all the projects and businesses we’ve supported, our most gratifying as a Team is without hesitation the Hurricane Harvey Recovery project. Living through the unique experience of Katrina and that type of devastating recovery process redefined our losses as our purpose. The people we met after Harvey and faces we brought relief to made every day during that recovery period even more meaningful. We are proudest to have been a part of the team that brought the City of Houston back to life.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Networking is not most people’s favorite thing to do, but it is necessary. I think I am truly HORRIBLE at it, and even on my best day selling to people an overwhelming personal challenge. Creating the hack effective in keeping a positive mindset requires me to disconnect from being the business owner and transition to being an employee. The disconnect has allowed for far better conversations about what clients are actually struggling with, instead of what wonderful services we are selling. Not being “sales”-centric in your approach opens more authentic discussions and relationships. Our aim is never to sell you our services, it is to provide you with the solutions you need.
Also, disconnecting from the company’s owner role makes it far less personal, thus less intimidating when presenting my ideas to others. Now, it becomes just a casual conversation about their pain points.
