Check Out Lindsay Cross’ Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay Cross

Hi lindsay, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
The Delicate Rose School of Arts was created to provide a safe space for kids through adults to pursue performing arts and dance. We also offer an Adult program to help adults who would like to dance and do shows, our students ages 14+ are eligible for this program. I was working as a teacher and wanted to provide a space where kids could have the opportunity to take class regardless of ability, disability, and/or financial status. I also wanted a place that kids would be safe and in a non bullying environment, all of our students are on a behavioral contract to ensure this. Teaching as an educator you see many children that need extra enrichment and extra curricular to fill those spaces but do not have the finances to do so and I felt this was something the Houston community falls a little short. I also work on scripts and reading techniques so students can improve their reading abilities, I will say it has not been easy due to not having the ability to access grants but we will continue to help those who need it regardless of circumstances. We originally started in my garage with zero funds and a dream to help others, then we started renting through a local school while saving up as my day job pays my personal home bills, I took on the task to door dash to save money and keep the dream alive I finally saved enough to open a space so we could help more children and adults, my goal is to inspire and let everyone know that you can do anything no matter your ability or disability, everyone can succeed you just have to bring your dreams to reality.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not been a smooth road for our school at all, the access to funds have made it super challenging. We recently tried to apply for a grant and where denied due to not being within a city council district even though we reside in the city of Houston. Also medically there has been issues due to personal medical issues as I have cancer this has been a hiccup in the road. However we still keep going.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I definitely love what I do, creating work that is inclusive with my students through expressions and creativity. I feel that I am known for ideas out of the box and creating an abstract world of ideas. I am most proud of my students and their creative process and ability to work as a team. I am also proud of the team effort from my professional group for an upcoming show called Psychosis that will debut in the beginning of April this show has deep meaning about mental health and this show is a collaboration with me and my amazing group. What I believe sets us apart is the creative, challenging, nurturing ability and understanding. I also believe my training as a teacher and from personal experience allows me work with adults, children and those with disabilities. I believe this sets us apart. Empathy is always key and everyone needs to know that anything is possible.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
As for now the next 5-10 years is unknown, we currently have plans to open a space near 610 area possibly Spring Branch area or inside the loop, so that we can have access to grants to help our students out. We plan this fall to do a back to school drive to help students who need it. We also hope to work with more shelters and provide theater classes and dance to them as we currently work with one shelter. We also plan for our professional group to do more shows in the Future and provide more dance programs for adults as dance and theater are great ways to work out emotional and daily stresses.
