Today we’d like to introduce you to Lisa O’Brien.
Hi Lisa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was adopted out as a baby should’ve been aborted, but raised by an Italian family in New York. I got to Texas as soon as I could became a registered nurse and I’ve done a whole lot of nursing and created a lot of business businesses in 30+ years.
Raising teenagers can be difficult and very trying really teaches you how to pray. During the middle of this, I was offered an opportunity to go on a mission trip to Haiti
We ended up in the most dangerous slum of the western hemisphere, Cite Soleil. I had never seen such suffering, pain and starvation and loneliness in my entire life.
After return returning from that trip, I started at 501 C3 because so many friends were donating me money for the cause. I have continued to lead medical teams into the slums for 11 years.
At present, we’re providing nutritious food and medical care for 100 children who are severely malnourished we also provide wound care and food for mothers and grandmothers, orphans, and widows, who are starving alone and able to care for their families for themselves
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The struggles were numerous no clean water, they live in sewage and surrounded by open sewage canals, so disease was rampant. To get into work we have to go through knee-deep sewage so the culture is completely different. The language is completely different. And so many gang wars with bullets flying, and men getting killed is very common and part of their every day life.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Registered nurse, business, owner, and president of a foundation that does Missionary work. I have brought over 100 individuals to assist with the work.
What’s such a part is on the US side none of us are paid!
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
I had no idea what I was getting into and I don’t even know what tomorrow’s gonna bring with a volatile situation down there, but my advice is to keep moving forward a day by day step-by-step and pray a lot!
