Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Cummings.
Mary, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
After nearly 40 years in the retail nursery world, and as a Certified Horticulturist, I opened the doors to my lifelong dream — Gardenwright.
My love of gardens began as a child, helping my parents tend their home garden. That early spark grew into a lifelong passion, leading me to work in and manage retail nurseries across the Houston and Conroe area. Now, I’m planting roots right here in Conroe — a town that reminds her of home — and inviting the community to experience gardening in a fresh, inspiring way.
🌸 Gardenwright is more than a plant shop — it’s a boutique gardening experience, thoughtfully curated for those who love to bring beauty into everyday life.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Life is full of struggles. Starting any journey is hard physically and emotionally. Having people who believe in you, want you to succeed and are willing to lend a hand, make any road smoother. Asking for help is the hardest thing, but gives you the greatest rewards.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I love helping people grow into being a good gardener. Teaching someone who claims they “kill everything”, that they can be a good gardener, is my goal. Giving an explanation, instead of a short, basic answer that teaches nothing, allows gardeners to process the information. I enjoy sharing what I know and am always learning too. Fortunately, we live is one of the countries best gardening environments. We can garden 12 months of the year. The opportunities to garden and the learning never stops.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I hope that people will continue valuing small businesses of all types, including plant nurseries.. The wealth of knowledge of small business owners, has no end and they are willing to share it with their customers. In the horticulture industry, we are always looking for new plants that are easy to grow and offer unique qualities to gardens. We are constantly searching for better attributes of tried and trusted plants. We constantly search for products that will solve problems and strive to find Earth friendly products. Change is slow, taking years or even decades to bring a new plant or products to market, but you can’t hurry Mother Nature, she has her own timeline. Learning to work with her, makes you a good gardener.
