Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Hatton.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started The Cake Chica blog from a genuine love of baking and creativity. What began as making cakes and desserts for family and friends slowly turned into a deeper passion for recipe development, food photography, and storytelling through food.
As I spent more time baking, I became increasingly interested in the details behind a great recipe, not just flavor, but texture, technique, and presentation. Over time, that curiosity pushed me to improve my skills both in the kitchen and behind the camera. What started as a hobby eventually grew into a full creative outlet where I could combine baking, photography, styling, and content creation all in one place.
The Cake Chica has evolved a lot over the years. In the beginning, it was mostly about sharing recipes I loved. Now it’s become a brand that reflects my style: approachable, made-from-scratch, elevated desserts with a strong focus on beautiful visuals and reliable recipes. I spend a lot of time testing recipes so readers can feel confident making them at home, and I’ve also developed a real passion for creating images that feel warm, inviting, and bakery-inspired.
One thing that has remained consistent throughout the journey is my desire to keep learning and growing. Enrolling in a food photography course became a major turning point for me. It not only helped me refine my photography and styling skills, but also inspired me to expand beyond recipe creation and launch Chica Creative Studios, a space where I can focus more intentionally on food photography, visual storytelling, and creative content. It’s been exciting to see how The Cake Chica has evolved from a baking blog into a brand that blends culinary creativity and photography in a way that feels authentic to me.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t always been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges has been navigating the constantly changing world of blogging, especially things like Google updates, SEO, keywords, and shifting online trends. It can feel overwhelming at times because there’s so much focus on algorithms and analytics.
At the end of the day, though, my passion has always been creating great recipes and sharing them with people. That’s what keeps me grounded and motivated. While I understand the importance of the technical side of blogging, I try not to lose sight of why I started in the first place, which was simply a love for baking, creativity, and creating recipes people can truly enjoy and trust.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a recipe developer, food photographer, and content creator specializing in made-from-scratch cakes and elevated desserts through my blog, The Cake Chica. My focus is creating reliable, approachable recipes that feel bakery-inspired while still being achievable for home bakers.
Over the years, food photography has also become a major part of my work. I love creating warm, inviting images that tell a story and capture the feeling of comfort, celebration, and nostalgia that desserts often bring. That creative side of the business eventually led me to launch Chica Creative Studios, where I can focus more intentionally on food photography and visual storytelling.
I think what sets my work apart is the combination of detailed recipe development and strong visual presentation. I care deeply about both aspects equally. I want the desserts to taste incredible, but I also want the imagery to inspire people to bake and create meaningful moments around food.
What I’m most proud of is how much The Cake Chica has grown and evolved over the years while still staying true to why I started. Even as trends and platforms change, I’ve continued to focus on creating quality content that feels authentic to me and helpful to my audience.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
People can connect with me through both The Cake Chica and Chica Creative Studios, depending on what they’re looking for. The Cake Chica is where I share my recipes, baking content, and dessert inspiration, while Chica Creative Studios focuses more on food photography, visual storytelling, and creative collaborations.
I’m always excited to connect with brands, fellow creatives, and readers who share a love for baking and food photography. The best places to keep up with my work are Instagram and Facebook, where I’m the most active and regularly share new recipes, behind-the-scenes content, and photography work.
For recipe and blog-related inquiries, you can reach me through The Cake Chica. For photography or creative collaborations, you can contact me through Chica Creative Studios. I always love connecting with people who are passionate about food, creativity, and visual storytelling.
