Today we’d like to introduce you to Mayra Aldrete
Hi Mayra, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started loving hair & make up when I was in high school. I actually applied for the cosmetology program but I wasn’t accepted. I then graduated high school and went to Sam Houston State University where I received my Bachelor’s degree in Criminal justice. I worked for TSA for a couple of years but I realized that I still loved doing make up. I was still freelancing in make up and as I was doing that I kept getting asked if I knew how to do hair also but I didn’t. Therefore I left TSA and enrolled in Paul Mitchell the school Houston.I went there for a year and received my license. Now I can do both hair and make up for brides, quinceañeras and special events. This is my passion, this is where I belong. Making people feel beautiful inside and out is what I love to do. Although I still love the criminal justice field I knew that being in the hair industry the schedule would be more flexible for me and my kids.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Some of the challenges I went through was trying to convince my parents that this was what I wanted to do but they insisted in me going to college and so I did. I also had 2 young boys at that time of going to the university but I made it work for them. Now I have 2 boys (18and 16) a daughter (5).
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in make up and special event hairstyles for brides and quinceañeras. I’ve grown to master so many skills by practicing and continuing my education with classes. Therefore I have also mastered Hollywood waves and extensions. I’m most proud of my dedication and drive to keep bettering myself and my skills. Everything I have accomplished is for my kids, they have definitely seen me grow. What I feel sets me apart from others is my personality. I love to listen and make people feel great not only on the outside but from within. I have been told from several clients that I make them feel as if they’ve known me all their life and that makes me feel blessed to be able to relate with everyone that sits in my chair.
