Hi Mayra, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I was born in Mexico, raised in Houston Texas since I was eight months old. I grew up around businessmen and women, no not in the corporate world, but in the small business world. My parents immigrated from Mexico for a better future and raised my brother, sister and I with the mindset that you always work hard for what you want. My parent’s small business has to do with authentic Mexican food and I have worked with them since I can remember.
I believe that growing up with these role models and with these values helped me with my own journey in the small business world. I began my business by making a few charcuterie boards for family and friends, they gave me great feedback and a push for me to follow my dreams. I took a leap and began purchasing items and trying new things. From this moment on, there was no turning back. I knew hard work was ahead and I was ready for it.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. I have 101 things to do besides running my small business and getting into a good rhythm is difficult. I work for my parents full time, Sunday- Friday. I coach crossfit classes two times a week. I am a full time mom and wife. I work out five times a week and help my mother prep healthy meals for fellow crossfit athletes. As you can tell, I am very busy, It is difficult, but its a controlled chaos that I enjoy.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Taking it OverBoard is a business that specializes in Charcuterie Boxes and Boards that range in sizes. We like to think that our ever changing ingredients and our unique arrangements define us, no one board is ever exactly the same, unless our customers specifically ask for it. I am most proud of how far our small business has come, we started with small boxes that featured everything but the kitchen sink, we have gradually found our vision for our brand and are very excited to see what the future holds for us.
