Check Out Megan Maldonado’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Maldonado.

Hi Megan, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started All My Stars Studio as an ode to my daughter, my sun, my moon, and all my stars, in 2020. I had just graduated with my business degree and had a hard time finding work due to COVID, so I decided to try and sell some mom-related cards and stickers to bring in some income. I started to experiment more with my range, and made things that ultimately brought me joy to show my daughter that following your dreams should be fun! I started making Houston and pop-culture themed art, and my online business started to take off.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definitely not. Since I hand make almost everything, there were many learning curves along the way. I had to research and try out the best papers for my printer, ask for feedback, learn from constructive criticism, and continue to keep pushing myself to improve. When I found out that I was pregnant with my second baby, I took a break from art for a while, and I was worried it might not be in the cards for me to return to it. I’m so glad that I returned to my passion for art and creating!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in digital art (no AI). I draw 95% of my drawings because I have the lefty-curse, where I smear my ink because I’m left-handed. Drawing in Procreate prevents that from happening!

I am the most proud of my original Houston skyline piece! I drew it on a 5×7 flat card during Hurricane Harvey, and scanned it years later to digitalize it. It always reminds me of how much pride I have in this city, and drawing it in flowers reminds me of how resilient Houstonians are. After the rain come the flowers.

I think what sets me apart from others is the use of florals, bright colors, or puns in my work. These things bring me the most joy, and I want to showcase that in the work I make.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Cliché, but never give up! Honestly, I have walked away from my art more than once, and I always felt the calling to return to it. It has taught me to implement boundaries so creating is something I can love, not dread. It has taught me to be confident in my capabilities. It is showing my children that they can find joy every day and work towards their dreams.
