Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Higgins.
Hi Melissa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I started working with florals in my friend’s basement when I would go home to visit my hometown in the suburbs of Chicago for her wedding and event floral business, Bonnie Bee Flowers. That was where my love for floral design started. It wasn’t until about a year later (during March of 2020) where I found myself at home with my 1 and 3 year old during the quarantine.
My same friend sent me a packet of seeds and told me to get outside and start planting. Gardening helped ground me and give me a new focus and direction. That confidence with gardening led me to getting my official floral design business started. I used that time at home to start Blooms by Mela, create relationships with wholesalers and start my Instagram. I truly found my passion and love the design process and the finished project. Since then I have been collaborating with businesses, marketing through Instagram and have had the opportunity to flower many weddings events since.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My biggest obstacle so far has been how to actually run the business side of it. As a creator, I love the actual floral design part. Even if I am pulling an all-nighter, I am happiest when I am creating with flowers. One thing I struggle with is imposter syndrome. When I’m around other creators who have amazing talent, it’s hard to even think I deserve a seat at that table.
Also, I do have to do a lot of juggling with my kiddos. My husband works a lot so I have two tiny helpers with me. Oftentimes, if I”m designing in the night (I’m a night owl) I will have a 2 year old up helping me sweep up greens. I love that I get to show them what hard work and following your dreams can do.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in wedding and event florals. My style is organic, loose and luxe. I am most proud of my whole customer experience. I love working with my clients to provide a customized vision for their wedding and helping prioritize their needs. I like my bouquets big, organic and dreamy.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I”m an open book so what you see is what you get. I try in my business and personal life to be as authentic as possible. One thing that people may not know is that I am not a Houston native. I grew up in Schaumburg, Illinois, a northwest suburb of Chicago. I’ve been living here for 12 years and have fallen in love with Houston and love living in Texas.
