Check Out MIde Lawani’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to MIde Lawani.

Hi MIde , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey with The Sweet Layers Factory started really simply, as a mom baking for my kids and family. Back in 2018, I was just making birthday cakes at home, never imagining it would turn into something bigger. But little by little, more people began asking me to bake for them, and I realized how much joy I found in creating cakes that felt personal, stylish, and unforgettable.

As the passion grew, I wanted to take it seriously and refine my craft. That led me to train at Le Cordon Bleu and later at L’Atelier Pâtissier in Paris. Those experiences were eye-opening – I learned not only the technical side of pastry and cake design but also how to bring artistry into every detail. It gave me the confidence to blend taste and design in a way that feels true to who I am.

Today, The Sweet Layers Factory is a boutique online cake studio proudly based in Conroe, serving Houston, The Woodlands, and Spring. We’ve built our business around convenience and creativity, making it easy for people to order signature, custom, or even same-day cakes right from their phones. Looking ahead, my goal is to keep leveraging technology to make celebrating with cake even more seamless, while staying rooted in what makes us unique: thoughtful design, unforgettable taste, and a whole lot of love baked in.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been smooth, but I think that’s part of the beauty of the journey. In the early days, I was balancing motherhood, family life, and long nights in the kitchen while figuring out how to grow from baking for friends into running a real business. My professional background helped me bring structure into the chaos, but what truly kept me going was the support of family and the strength of partnership.

There were plenty of challenges and moments of doubt, but leaning on faith and resilience made all the difference. My husband always reminds me of a simple truth: “Little by little, the bird builds its nest.” And that’s exactly how The Sweet Layers Factory came to life – not overnight, but one cake, one customer, one celebration at a time.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At The Sweet Layers Factory, everything starts with cakes that are made fresh from scratch , no shortcuts, just real ingredients and a whole lot of love. What began as me baking for my kids’ birthdays has grown into a boutique online cake studio serving Conroe, The Woodlands, Spring, and Houston. We’re known for modern, stylish cakes that taste just as good as they look.

What makes me proud isn’t just the designs – it’s the moments behind them. A little boy seeing his superhero cake and not wanting to cut it. A couple sharing their first slice. A neighbor surprising a friend “just because.” Those are the memories that remind me why I do this.

What sets us apart is that we’ve made it easy for people to order beautiful, custom cakes online, but behind the screen it’s still a family kitchen. Every design is thoughtful, every detail is intentional, and every order matters to us. At the end of the day, it’s never just about cake, it’s about helping people celebrate life’s sweetest milestones in a way that feels personal and unforgettable.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
One of my favorite childhood memories is being in the kitchen with my grandma during holidays. She would let me help her measure, stir, and taste while she told stories about family and life. It wasn’t fancy – just simple, happy moments filled with warmth, good smells, and laughter.

I still remember her words in Yoruba: “Sùúrù ni baba ìwà,” which means “Patience is the father of character.” She would say it when I was eager to rush through mixing or decorating. Those moments shaped me more than I realized at the time. Looking back, I see how much of my love for baking – and my belief that food brings people together – was born right there in her kitchen.
