Check Out Mister’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mister.

Hi Mister, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
The Beginning, I started my musical journey back in 2017. I was in college and after the passing of my Grandmother, I had a realization that life truly is short, nothing lasts forever. So I had to peruse something that I truly did enjoy doing 110% of the time. I was at the University of Kentucky in the Bachelor of Fine Arts program. It sounds really nice but it was very bland, in-diverse, and I was already struggling with the death of my Grandmother and two of my Aunts that passed away a week after she did.

So that October (after my birthday), I left UK and returned home with no plan of what I wanted to do with my future. I said that I was gonna, “take a break” to figure out where I wanted to go but deep down inside; the harsh and scary reality lurked within me…I didn’t really know where I was going the moment I left that campus. My original plan was to transfer to “Clark Atlanta” in Atlanta, Georgia in hopes of pursuing an Acting Career. But I realized at UK that I didn’t love Acting as much as I once thought I did.

So for the remainder of the year. I played around in GarageBand. I tried making beats and even made a few and sang along to them. But I just looked at it as a hobby and nothing more.

2018. January of that year, I started making more and more music. I released this single called, “All-night”. I searched around my city (Louisville, KY) for Engineer’s or other Artists and I caught the attention of the R&B sensation BRXTN. He’s also based out of Louisville. We met and conversed, he told me, “show off that vocal range in the booth!” So he booked a session for us and everything. Set everything up. Introduced me to a very successful and established engineer and my hobby went from being just that to a part of my life and form of expression. 2018 was probably the second biggest/most important year for me musically. I released my first ever EP, titled “AfterDark”. It had 5 songs and was centered around love and heartbreak.

2019. Very lack luster of me and my skills. I was still trying to heal from some damage that went on in my personal life during 2018 and while I was trying to do so, it impacted my music negatively. Plus new damage and trauma was being inflicted upon me. I released 4 singles that year and I saw the hype that I had in 2018 die down tremendously by not staying consistent.

I went from April – December with no music. I released a single called “Same Love” on the first of December. I had my first ever show in a club called “Nirvana” I. Louisville, KY off of Bardstown Rd.

2020. The Biggest growth spurt for me had to be this year. I found myself talented in many ways than just beyond singing.

I started the year off strong by purchasing my own musical equipment before Covid-19. I already had decent equipment but it was basically like an upgrade. I then sought out a studio session with my then engineer at “Huge Music” here in the heart of Louisville on “¡4th Street Live!” Owned by Pitbull’s Brother. We did it. It costed me over $1,200.00 for 2 days, and leasing beats.

I then saw how even more expensive music was getting for me. That was a huge jump from the $400 for 8 hours. I’m used to that still is expensive to someone like me that works a regular 9-5.

The Pandemic, Covid-19 was officially in the US. I was networking with different Artists that would’ve given me the boost I needed to gain my momentum back but due to the closures, cases, and overall mania. A lot of those connections and engagements fell short once again. But I continued to fight. I took my equipment over my then, engineer’s mother’s house, we recorded songs in the basement. We did 4 or 6 songs over the span of like 4 days. 8 hours or more a session. Everything seemed to be working in my favor. I even mapped out the album I wanted to make. So he returned to Atlanta to work at his label and studio. So I continued to work from home and just paid him electronically.

Fast forward to the end of the year and I started training myself how to mix/master due to the dishonest individuals I encountered. I mixed and mastered my first song in October of 2020.

2021. I know how to mix and master now. My album is almost 2 years behind but I’ve released volume one of it and I’m mixing volume 2 as we speak. I also put all the money I was putting into others…into myself and I’ve been growing since. I bought Pro Tools, and other expensive plugins/mixing and mastering essentials.

I plan on upgrading my microphone and audio interface by the end of next year. But a music video is definitely at the top of my list priority wise.

March of 2021, I met Lovesyncere Music (Yarr) and we’ve collaborated on some songs and we’ve been close since.

He also introduced me to Pedro Llanes (PAPO) and we all 3 recently did a song together. It was a very fun experience! I’m grateful to have two very good supportive friends from Houston, Texas. Even though I’m stuck in Louisville, KY for now it’s all love and support over here for them from me! Always!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I would be lying if I said it’s been all easy. I blame myself for 50% of my obstacles. Just because some of my bad luck has followed me from my childhood. I’ve always battled depression and anxiety.

My response to having those mental illnesses have blocked many great opportunities and I only have myself to blame. When it comes to doing music. I had little to no guidance so I can’t be super mad at myself for not being more careful or aware. But definitely studio time, trust, and risks. Have all been obstacles and struggles. I put too much of my trust into individuals and situations that never ended in my favor on a good note.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a Singer/Song-Writer/Co-Producer/Recording Engineer. I specialize in vocals and making catchy hooks and just touching on taboo subjects. I’m most proud of my ability to turn the negative things I endured in 2020 around into something great.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I’ll definitely say YouTube. It definitely helps me decompress from a long day at work or daunting recording session. YouTube is my go-to if I’m feeling down or I’m bored/lonely.
