Today we’d like to introduce you to Naketa Young.
Hi Naketa, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m the youngest of 5, my mom had 5 kids but today only 2 are living. My 2 brothers died from muscle dystrophy, and my oldest sister died from birth defects. I never knew exactly what I wanted to do in life, but I knew I wanted to inspire and impact people’s lives. Going through racial discrimination made me start Broskiiz.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. Starting a business without many opportunities to get loans or grants is hard. I invest my own money into Broskiiz, and took out my 401 k to make sure we are a competitive business. The obstacles continue throughout a small business. Mechanical issues lead the way, lol. Maintenance on boats and jetskis is no joke. Also, making sure all transportation is registered and following all safety precautions.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Right now, I have a 9-5 to support my small business. Honestly, I’ll never be completely happy until I start working for myself. I learned that about myself after leaving a job for 7 years. I realized working from someone doesn’t make me happy. It doesn’t fulfill me. I want to enjoy what I do. I’m known for being the life of the party, the let’s get TURNT!
I’m most proud of taking the step to start my own business at 34 yrs old.
What sets me apart is my willingness to succeed at all cost. I believe in what I do. I believe that I will make it one day.
I want to thank Ricky for believing in my vision and being my Partner in crime. My family for giving me support and encouragement. My girlfriend for the understanding when I’m super busy with work and business. All my friends and customers for helping Broskiiz continue to stay in business and continue to serve the community. I love y’all, man. Broskiiz Watersports will not be here without any of you.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory would be my nanny buying me Cynthia Cooper shoes. I loved Houston Comets. Getting Cynthia Cooper shoes was such a highlight for me.
