Check Out Nichole Cano’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nichole Cano.

Hi Nichole, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
How it all started well before social media was as big as it is now working to get noticed wasn’t as easy as it is now with all the platforms we have. I feel like I always had a passion for beauty even as a child I would get magazines and a red or black pen and draw on models faces by adding red lips or more liner to enhance their image. In high school, I would always do my makeup and people would always ask me to get them ready in class in which we always got in trouble for lol.

Fast forwarding to my early twenties I would have regular jobs in the mall but my passion was still in beauty I would try to get makeup jobs and when MySpace was a big deal I would post makeup looks I did on myself and at that time lady Gaga was new in the music scene and she got notice for her exotic makeup looks etc so I followed that trend in doing crazy eye catching looks with vibrant colors etc so I started to network and try meeting models or photographers to get noticed. I had no Facebook no Instagram at that time but a site called model mayhem that was how you networked and got gigs and I’m sure that website will tell how old I am lol I got to work with numerous photographers by that site met local models got published in the knot magazine that was big for me I wanted this so bad and I remember my dream was to become the next Joyce Bonelli which was Kim Kardashian’s first makeup artist and she was and is still a big idol for me so my drive to be on that level was my ultimate goal. I thought at that time getting my foot in the door at Mac cosmetics was another dream and unfortunately, they turned me away and it was beyond the biggest heartbreak and I felt I wasn’t gonna be where I am now if I didn’t get my foot in the door at one of the biggest brands at that time.

After getting turned away from Mac I had to collect myself and think of my next move and what I need to do to prove to my parents and myself that I can actually do this and make it my career. Once social media started to grow I met a makeup artist named Sara Eudy on Facebook she had me intern with her and all I did was clean her makeup brushes and learn her ways. She did big wedding jobs and photo shoots, I was there to learn and one day she had me assist her on location for a big wedding and told me to start working and do a client’s hair and I freaked out but I did it and it all came out amazing so not only did I do makeup I also learned how to style hair. From then on it’s like the ball was rolling for me and it was rolling fast because she had big clientele and I was her partner for it all. I got to big shoots, big weddings, even more I was getting noticed for it and traveling to do makeup.I worked with her for over 6 years and to this day we are still very close. So in my mid 20s going into my early 30s I had a normal 9-5 job and only did makeup on the weekends but I ended up getting pregnant not to mention I was miserable at my job and it’s like my makeup was fading but I felt like I needed to keep making money to support my new baby.

After I had my daughter I took a leap of faith and decided to be happy again and do what I love full time so I quit my job at the hospital and two weeks later I started cosmetology school. It was a year full of new opportunities and emotional transitioning as a new mom and a full time cosmetology student. After I graduated in 2019 I decided to open up my own business in which the name “BloomBeautyRoom” it was the end of 2019 beginning of 2020 and as soon as I opened my in home salon we got shut down with a worldwide pandemic and all shops, stores and salons were to be closed til further notice and I never had a proper opening of my new business and trying to promote a new business in a pandemic was hard lol but I still didn’t give up.

Once salons were able to open up I took a lash course and just did lashes out of my salon to bring some money in since no one was going anywhere because of covid but the ladies sure wanted their lashes done after being stuck in quarantine for a year. The year 2021 was a big year for my business and it was like a never ending year of continuous blessing of a full calendar year of clients. I worked so hard for this moment and this year I got to travel so much for my work, I got to do hair and makeup for The New York Times, google pixel, at&t shoot, hair and makeup for Francesca’s etc.
It’s like I manifested this moment to be a successful makeup artist. Currently, I still have my studio and the big dream is still to go further in my business, making women feel empowered with a red lip or make a bride feel how she always wanted to as a little girl on her wedding day. The possibility is still endless and I continue to strive for more than my goals.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Competing with many new artists in the beauty world was difficult because you need to set yourself apart from others just as good as the next. We have YouTube, Instagram and Facebook to promote yourself so the rise of artists was a big struggle but I also met a lot of artists that I networked with. Covid was also a big struggle because I had to work hard to get my business out there and keep it afloat as other small businesses closed I worked hard to keep mine open and not go back to a regular job. I worked hard in school and quit my job for this so there was no looking back I just had to keep moving forward even if life threw a big curveball.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in hair and makeup. I mainly do big weddings across Texas and I travel for it. I’m proud of not giving up when my dad would say I will never make money from doing makeup. I’m proud of being published and getting to fly on jets to work for big companies doing makeup. Also keeping up with new trends as makeup changes throughout the years. I’m proud of not only doing this for myself but doing it for my daughters and showing them that you can always accomplish any goal you set and follow your dreams.

I also really connect with all my clients. It’s like they become family because I grow with them through the years of them becoming my regulars. I will meet them as their makeup artist for their wedding and continue to make them feel beautiful getting them ready at their baby shower. So I can say I grow with my clientele through the years.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Favorite childhood memory was getting my mom’s concealer and literally using it all over my face and I remember she was so mad at me going through her makeup and yea I guess you can say the makeup dream started then.
