Check Out Poppy Tart’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Poppy Tart

Hi Poppy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It all started with a little girl who asked her mom to take her to a dance class when she was 6. I grew up dancing different styles from classic to folk dance to b-girls ( hip-hop classes for girls) and then go-go dancing when I was 18 and up.
When I moved to the US I continued dancing in night clubs, music events and various themed parties. Later I started an entertainment business with another girl and I pretty much took care of everything from finding and booking girls, to managing them, making costumes and performing at gigs myself. At the time I got familiar with burlesque and fell in love with this art. I remember when I saw my first burlesque show I thought to myself “I can do it”. It took me a couple years to co-produce my first burlesque show where I performed my first burlesque act, at that time it was a duet. Later same year, my business partner and I went separate ways and that’s when I knew exactly what I want to do next. I went straight to Houston Divine Studio, where wonderful Valentina J’adore taught burlesque classes there. I wanted to surround myself with new people and learn more about burlesque. I even tried to get in Prohibition theater but soon the pandemic happened and the club shut down. Right before, I debuted my first solo burlesque act and was ready to dive into the burlesque industry. When stay home rules got lifted and we were able to perform for live audiences back again, I instantly started getting more bookings. Then I got pregnant but still were able to perform up until 5 month pregnant. Then I took a break and when my baby was 5 months I was back performing again. Next summer was a transformative for me. I already had to build my new identity as a mother and recovering from childbirth but I also felt more motivation to do things. I felt so much passion for burlesque and knowing my strength at being creative and organized, I decided that I am going to produce burlesque shows. I had my vision, I knew exactly what kind of burlesque shows I want to see and to do. I wanted to elevate burlesque experience for Houstonians. I was looking for a nice place where we can have a big stage and a comfortable seating arrangements for guests. Henke & Pillot, downtown Houston was pur choice with their stage on the 2nd floor. That’s were I have been doing all my productions since day one. For my shows I invited best burlesque performer in Houston and Texas and on top of that I bring out of state and out of the country headliners – award winning and world famous burlesque stars.
This Halloween will be 2 year anniversary of Poppy Tart Productions. I am very excited to continue growing, bringing fine burlesque shows to Houston and introduce burlesque to new audiences.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The hardest part is probably selling the show. Being a small business and doing what I do makes it a little hard to advertise. A lot of people are not familiar with this art form. And those that have seen burlesque before or have been going to Prohibition theater, may not use social media a lot to be able to come across our page and find out about our shows.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
