Check Out Rodney D Butler’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rodney D Butler

Hi Rodney D, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was an artistically gifted young man, that after graduating from Madison High School. I gain a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture from Tuskegee University and later an Associate’s Degree in Computer Animation from the Art Institute of Houston. It was while at AIH, I realized I was truly an Artist. After a few years passed of me trying different art forms and small business ideas, I discovered I had a passion for welding and later oil painting. So, with my Architecture and Art school background, I was able to quickly pick up on concepts like hand and eye coordination, color theory, composition and structural stability. Now I have a collection of Metal Sculptures and Oil paintings that have been exhibited in Sculpture Gardens, Galleries and Museums across the country.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I believe the greatest obstacles I or any Artist faces, is the ones we put on ourselves. As good as anyone tells me I am. I still struggle with my own self-doubt and sometimes unrealistic expectation of myself, my skill set and my abilities.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Currently, I’m in love with Oil painting and Blacksmithing. Most Saturdays, if I’m not in the Studio working on a Painting, I’m out in a park somewhere Blacksmithing with the Houston Area Blacksmithing Association. I think I’m most proud of being able to come such a long way in a short span of time. While still having the time to inspire and encourage up incoming Artist with mentorship, advice and opportunities. Personally, I think the only thing that sets me apart from others is my ideas, skills and thought process. Other than that, I’m just another cool down to earth Artist.

What are your plans for the future?
I just plan to learn and grow as much as I can as an Artist and see where it takes me. I never planned or expected it to have come this far, so who knows where this ride goes.
