Today we’d like to introduce you to Sabri’A Price.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started drawing and painting back in high school. I’ve always loved drawing as a young child. But I started painting when my high school geometry teacher was cleaning out her classroom at the end of my junior year and gave me a bunch of art supplies. I started painting everyday on anything I could find – scraps of paper, cardboard, whatever! I went on to Sam Houston State University to study marketing and I never stopped doing art whenever I had free time. I then began to dabble into digital art and using canvases. Eventually classmates started asking for commissions and friends and family began supporting me as well. I even entered my art in a contest at school and was selected for my first exhibition! When I graduated from SHSU in 2019, covid hit and it was hard to find a marketing job as a new grad with no experience. I decided to go full time with my art with the support of my family. I began my art shop and sold everything from paintings, prints, mugs, stickers, and clothing! I did a lot of trade shows, met a lot of amazing people and sold my art online. Unfortunately the business side of art kind of changed my relationship with it and now I create as an outlet and hobby more than anything. Once an artist always an artist 🙂
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. When I started doing art full time, I had no idea what I was doing! I had no blue print so I had to figure everything out by myself. It took a lot of trial and error learning shipping, taxes, how to price my work, how to use Etsy, create content, etc. It definitely burned me out at times and I’d take breaks to go get a 9-5 just to take the pressure off. During the slow months where there were no sales or shows – it can be discouraging and make you question yourself.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a visual artist. I am most known for my paintings but I also create digital art. My work is all about nature, spirituality and how humans are connected to it all. I am self taught and I am so proud of how my art has evolved over the years!
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was very quiet and empathetic. I always had a variety of animals as pets – cats, dogs, fish, frogs, rabbits. I loved to read science fiction. And I loved fantasy video games. Basically anything about magic, nature, animals, and ancient worlds, I was into it. I feel like when you look at my art, you can see that about me.
