Check Out Sabrina Vargas’ Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sabrina Vargas

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My love for food and baking started at a young age watching Ace of cakes and Cake Boss. As I got older and what really sparked my interest in baking was finding out that my grandma used to make cakes. They weren’t just basic cakes either, she made those vintage Wilton wedding cakes you see from the how-to books. She made my mom’s wedding cake and cakes for quinceaneras. She gave me all her old Wilton cake decorating books that I’ll cherish forever.

The moment I knew I wanted to get into baking is when I went over to my cousin’s house one day and she was practicing making buttercream roses. She was taking a cake decorating class at the time and she showed me how to make one. I immediately fell in love and wanted to learn more! So I taught myself the basics and started to make cakes for my family and friends in 2013. I loved the idea of experimenting with different flavor combinations and just having a creative outlet. I then started to sell some of my cakes in High School, but soon stopped to take a break and start a career to be a Veterinary Technician.

After years studying to be a vet tech and working in the field for about three years it really took a toll on my mental health. I made the hard decision to leave my career to try and pursue my dream and started a small business in 2023. It was scary to think about leaving my career and technically start from the beginning, but I believed in myself and wanted to try and do what I truly love. Fast forward I’m now selling cakes as a cottage baker and attending pop-up markets. My goal is to become full-time and possibly open a bakery truck.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I think one of the biggest struggles in the beginning was just trying to balance my time with the bakery while having a full-time job. I’ve since then put more focus into my business and have a more balanced life going part time at my other job. I would say another struggle was just figuring out how to start a small business on my own and all the requirements that go in it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Mystic Bakery is a micro-bakery that specializes in custom vintage cakes and desserts for every occasion. Everything is made from scratch to the cake, buttercream, marmalades, fillings you name it. I don’t like using pre-made things from the store. If I can make it by hand I will gladly do it!

I find joy in all things spooky and cute and I think that shows through my brand because why choose between the two? That being said, no cake idea is too much. I love a challenge! If you have an idea in your head, I love trying to bring it to life no matter if it’s cute or weird. My current favorite thing that I offer is buttercream animals to add on top of cakes. Every detail is important to me! Not only do I want my cakes to taste amazing, I want them to look amazing! I pour my heart into all of my creations to make your celebrations/events special.

I’m most proud of being able to run my business myself. From the late night baking, dish washing, designing and planning. I want to do more and continue to grow while exploring different flavors.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
One podcasts that I listen to that helped me a lot in the beginning was, “Grow Your Local Business” by Leslie Presnall. She gives business advise and tips on how to gain clients in your area. She also interviews business owners and lets them share their stories which is inspiring to listen to.
