Check Out Sheritha Chambliss’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheritha Chambliss.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started as a certified nurse aid at the age of 19 yr old. After having my fourth child when I was 25 yr old I decided to obtain my GED and purse a career in nursing because I did not feel like the care i received during my pregnancy came from a place of compassion by the nursing staff or doctors. I completed my registered nursing license in 2010 at the top of my class and began working in critical care as a registered nurse. After four years of working in the ICU I decided to pursue an advanced degree in family practice as a advance nurse practitioner because I seen how the patients and their families struggled with a understanding of their care, chronic condition, and its impact on their overall health. I obtained Family Nurse Practitioner license in 2016 and my first job was working in a psychiatric hospital as part of the medical team for all clients admitted in the hospital. While working in the psychiatric hospital I found that many of the clients admitted struggled with substance abuse in addition to mental health illness. During my rounding and interaction with the patient at the hospital I was able to educate the patient about their mental health condition and its indirectly impacted on their health and substance use. This ignited a passion in me because I was able to impact change, educate, and reduce stigma surrounding mental health for the patient I was serving. In turn I decided to pursue a advanced degree in psychiatry in 2019, and completing my Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner degree in 2021. Upon completion of my advance degree I opened a Solo practice in 2022 that offers medication management for all mental health conditions to clients and their families.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My road to building my practice has not been a smooth one as I am the first in my family to obtain a advance degree and run a practice without a strong support network. I have learned from the mistakes made in the past with running and business and try to assess my progress at least weekly to ensure that barriers are addressed and or reduced. I think one of the biggest struggles for me the first year in practice was running a business with limited funding. Many of the things needed for the practice took longer than normal to obtain because I was denied for bank loans and would have to pick up extra shift at my second job to get the products needed to function successfully.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a board certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner who provides medication management to client struggling with mental health conditions that directly and indirectly impact their social, work, and academic performance. I am known for compassionate care that offers understanding and healing for both the client and their family member. I am proud that I am able to provide services that offer education and adherence to care for those clients that do not understand what they are experiencing or why it is directly impacting their daily function.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love the diversity Houston offers and least like the fact that many clients do not have access to mental health services
