Check Out Summer Borah’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Summer Borah

Hi Summer, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
After graduating from nursing school, I started off my nursing career in Surgical Oncology at The Sarah Cannon Cancer Hospital at Medical City Plano. Here, I can accredit much of my experience and baseline knowledge regarding patient care, mental health of patients, critical thinking skills, and management of some of the sickest patients. While working full-time at the hospital during COVID, I knew that the work I was doing was important but I hoped there was something better out there for me. My stress and anxiety before starting my 12 hour night shifts were getting to me and I knew I had to start searching in another direction if I wanted to prioritize my own mental health.

Thankfully, I was lucky enough to start working part-time for a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon/Mohs Surgeon/Dermatology Clinic in Dallas. It was at this practice that I found my love for aesthetics and soon after, I moved from my position as a bedside nurse to work for Dr. Thornwell H. Parker full time as a clinic RN and a surgical scrub nurse in the O.R.

During this time, I was lucky enough to receive the best training in facial anatomy and fine motor skills which I utilize as an aesthetic provider today. My days at this practice consisted of scrubbing into skin cancer removals (MOHs surgery), assisting in reconstructive surgeries, wound care, management of medication, assisting the MD with skin checks and also assisting the Nurse Practitioner and Physicians Assistant with aesthetic injectables. I feel so incredibly grateful to this Surgeon and his practice for this very unique background and the skills that I was able to add to my eager set of mastery and expertise.

I have since then moved to Houston and found my absolute dream job at the Aesthetic Center for Plastic Surgery (ACPS). I’m so proud to work with 8 of the most influential and renowned Surgeons in the country. Not only do I admire their talent, but their kindness and down to earth nature that is cherished by our patients. I’m so grateful to have found my calling. The precision of aesthetic medicine and the artistry of injectables is the perfect fit for me and I plan to further my education so that I give my patients the best outcomes possible.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As they say, all good things come to those who wait. I think it took me 7 years to finally get into a work space that I felt safe, utilized, cherished and autonomous in. I felt like I waited forever just to finish nursing school and start my career. In the hospital, I was always hoping things would get better. I was always praying that I would get used to the night shifts that had taken a huge toll on my body, that I wouldn’t let all the death around me effect my positivity and happiness, and that I could go to sleep without worrying about the patient I had left to the day shift nurse and try to trust that they would be okay without me until the next night.

In my other offices I worked at, I faced different challenges that were new to me. I always liked to work meticulously and at my own pace (within reason) and when I felt like I wasn’t quick enough to please others or I had too many questions in a new position, it would quickly overwhelm me and make me feel inadequate. I felt like there were employers I couldn’t trust when it came to my safety as a provider. I also had to go head to head with one of my employers because I stood my ground on putting a patients safety above the money they so desperately wanted from them.

I don’t regret those struggling years though. I think they were very important lessons for me. I now know that I work extremely well in a autonomous position but I need to know that I have help and another collaborator when needed. I know that I need to be in a space that allows questions and lots of learning opportunities from my Doctors and counterparts. Most importantly, I’ve determined that I need to be in a work environment with people who allow and support me to dream, grow and continuously learn.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Registered Nurse at The Aesthetic Center for Plastic Surgery (ACPS). I specialize in Aesthetic Medicine and perform treatments such as Botox, Dysport, Daxxify, Fillers, Platelets (PRP/PRF), PDO Threads, Hair Restoration, Vaginal Rejuvenation, Morpheus 8, Aveli (cellulite treatment), Hyperhydrosis treatments, Collagen Induction treatments and much more.

One of the things I am most proud of is that I try to treat patients with comprehensive care. Instead of them coming in to “fix” something, let’s look at the cause. You have deep lines around your mouth? Filling them will help temporarily, but lets try an approach from the inside out so that this doesn’t continue to get worse overtime and cause you to get filler there forever. The cause is from repeated muscle movements. Let’s relax that muscle with neurotoxin so we keep the line from getting deeper. Now lets stimulate collagen in the area to help decrease the deep line that is present. Let’s also make sure the patient is on medical grade skin care such a Retinoid and Vitamin C so that the patient is working on this at home.

One of the things that sets me apart from other Nurses in the Aesthetics industry is my passion for Vaginal Rejuvenation. I’ve always loved wellness and I want to help women feel confident and love their bodies. We go through so much physically as women. Most of us sacrifice our bodies to prioritize the care of others, some carry children and give birth, and unfortunately, a large number of people experience fluctuations and irregularities in hormones. I offer treatments that help women with bladder leakage, vaginal dryness, decreased sensitivity, laxity, and cosmetic concerns. These treatments are very comfortable and require no downtime.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I feel like having an altruistic, authentic and kind character is why I have grown to be successful in my career. I try my best to really spend time with my patients and get to know them. I don’t have 15 minute Dysport appointments like at a lot of other practices. I want to go over how the last treatment went, if there is anything that we can improve, and how are the kids and the new job going? I would take 60 loyal patients who are dear to my heart than 6,000 patients that I do not have the time to know or care about.

Another key characteristic that I know patients appreciate is pure honesty. I have to turn people down for filler A LOT. They need to know that from my expert opinion, sometimes adding more volume will make you look older when our goal is to look and feel more youthful. I think when I turn people down for treatments or explain why I think a different option would be better, they respect that.
