Today we’d like to introduce you to Tammi and Jennifer.
Hi Tammi and Jennifer, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Tammi: I always wanted to be an entrepreneur, like my mother. She comes from a family of entrepreneurs and owners of local small businesses in Mississippi. So it was embedded in my makeup to become an entrepreneur. After becoming the 5th African American to obtain my Ph.D. from Indiana University, I felt I needed to use my degree for the betterment of our industry that we (African Americans) support and yet always get damaged results. Just like with health care and any other market. I wanted to be able to provide luxurious products for the betterment and health of our hair. I teamed up with a cosmetologist and curated the brand Hair Luxury Company and organic vegan-friendly hair care line for all hair types. Beauty is a trillion-dollar industry. We need hair products that work best for itchy, dry hair and scalp, thickness, and growth retention, that minimize the time to Detangler and blow dry and also provide natural luster and sheen and our hair care line provides this at an affordable price using 100% USDA certified organic materials.
Jennifer: I started out behind the chair at a salon I. Jackson, Ms, and that’s where I met Tammi. At the time, my daughter had a ringworm in her head and it took a big amount of hair out of her scalp, so I began to mix and my own oils and hair grease to grow her hair back. Then Tammi bring my client she approached me about collaborating with her about a Hair Luxury brand, her not knowing what I had going on it was like a prayer answered for me because I needed help. From there, we have been together ever since.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Tammi: No, it hasn’t been a smooth road for me. During COVID-19 with all the programs available to help businesses and stimulus money, it helped the country continue to thrive during this time our business flourished and continued to grow despite the long shipping times and wait times for product material and customer orders.
Today, with the higher shipping rates due to increased gas prices, a decrease in the workforce overall, businesses closing earlier due to lack of employees, employees walking off jobs because of low wages all of this is affecting the growth of business everywhere, especially the beauty industry. Since material prices have increased, we are forced to increase our prices for our products which has made it even harder to sell. Also, not having access to seed, loans, and decreasing the funding opportunities to get loans has made it that much more difficult due to the higher credit scores needed and 5 figure monthly business revenue to acquire loans.
We continue to promote the brand by word of mouth, trade shows, traveling to different cities and participating in pop up shops and selling on other websites such as Walmart.com, Etsy.com, and now Amazon.com, and on out company site www.HairLuxuryCo.com our products are set to be in Walmart stores in Jan 2023.
Jennifer: Not at all!! Nothing has been easy. We have been through everything but I take everything that we went through as lessons. It taught us what to do, how to do it, what not to do and some shortcuts along the way.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
Jennifer: One thing you should know about Hair Luxury Company is that our products really WORK!! All because we use all organic ingredients and that’s something we both agreed on in the beginning. I’m a cosmetologist and with both our backgrounds, it only made sense to put both our knowledge and experience together. I specialized in healthy hairstyles as well as extensions and protective hairstyles. What sets us apart from others are our goals as a company !! What we want to achieve as a brand is beyond just selling haircare products! I am most proud of Hair Luxury Company being in Walmart stores around the world because I grew up in Walmart and to this day still shop there.
Tammi: I agree with Jennifer. The brand is innovative, affordable, 100% organic, and it really works for all hair types.
What matters most to you?
Tammi: Product quality and ingredients matter the most to me. I was asked do I think our products are worth the price. I merely stated YES! I’d rather pay $20 for products I know will not leave any harsh residue on my scalp, and hair strands than use a cheaper product that can damage my hair follicles over time because of the price. Our shampoos, conditioners, creams, styling products, and oils are all 100% organic with a year’s shelf life. They are a rich, healthy option for your hair like organic foods are for your diet. Our products get absorbed into the hair, scalp, and stimulate the hair follicle and penetrate the hair shaft and not just coat the hair. Our products have a new innovative science behind them that is crucial in maintaining moisture, hydration, and bringing natural luster to the hair and scalp.
Jennifer: What matters most to me is completing every goal we set for this company because this is a legacy we are leaving behind to our kids and their kids and etc… breaking generation curses
