Today we’d like to introduce you to Tricia Berry.
Hi Tricia, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve always been a creative, but I wasn’t always a photographer. I didn’t grow up with a camera in my hand; I had about a thousand dream jobs before I discovered photography. I think on my graduation announcements, it actually said I was going to be an ultrasound tech… that didn’t last long. I am passionate about a lot of things, but there is just something special about creating a photo that was unexpected. I think the thing I love about this is the feeling when I deliver a gallery and my client is shocked. “That’s me?” Or “How did you make it look like that?” Are the biggest compliments. I turned 25 in December, and in addition to photography, I homeschool my little boys and manage my household with their dad. I love people, I love art, and mostly, I love that I get to smush those things together and make a career out of it. In the future, I want to work more with other creatives and unique brands to create bigger sets/looks. 2023 was absolutely mind-boggling, and I am sure that 2024 will top it.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I think the hardest thing is consistency. Constantly working to do better and more creative shoots, but while still managing the business side of things and trying to keep up with social media gets pretty hectic. Somewhere in there I’m supposed to also find time to edit, cook three meals a day, and brush my hair here and there. Most of that happens most days, so I guess it’s going pretty smoothly.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I started out doing the typical family/maternity/couple shoots in a field. Although in the last year, I have really been inspired by fashion photography and decided to completely reshape my business to pursue it. I haven’t told anyone, but I’m actually going to change my business name and completely rebrand for 2024. Not sure if I should say it here but by the time this is published, it will probably already be out. I’ll be Anthropology Photo. Centered around creating things that no one has seen before. Photos that actually stick out even in the heavily saturated photography market. Photography to provoke, inspire, and, I hope, stand the test of time.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
It seems like as time goes on, the industry doesn’t change too much other than the introduction of more photographers. I can look back at photos taken before I was born that I could post on Instagram today, and no one would know they were old. That’s the thing about photography; it really can be timeless. I love that it is inspiring to so many people, I hold no grudges against new photographers. People message me all the time asking how I did something what I used, or how I edited, and I am so happy to give them all the tea. I hate seeing so many photographers’ gatekeeping, it’s just mean. If you want to do something that nobody else knows how to do be a rocket ship engineer or something… gatekeep that.
