We recently had the chance to connect with Christina Jenkins and have shared our conversation below.
Good morning Christina, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
People often assume we’re just another waxing studio—or that we only do one thing well. But Bare Necessities has always been rooted in something deeper: a genuine passion for customer service and an obsession with quality in everything we do. We’re esthetician-owned, which means we built this place from the treatment room up. Every product, every service, every detail has to meet a higher standard—because we’re not here to cut corners. We’re not a franchise. We don’t believe in cookie-cutter beauty or assembly-line service. Our clients come back because they feel seen, heard, and truly taken care of. That’s what sets us apart. And we’re fiercely proud of it.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I’m Christina, co-founder of Bare Necessities Spa & Boutique in Houston. I’m an esthetician by trade and by heart—I started this business in 2011 because I wanted to create a space where quality and care weren’t optional, they were the standard. Over the years, we’ve grown into a team that’s known for delivering consistent, real results—without gimmicks or pressure.
What makes us different is simple: we’re not a corporate franchise, and we’re not trying to be everything to everyone. We’re obsessed with service, obsessed with training, and obsessed with making sure every client leaves feeling better than when they came in—whether it’s from a wax, a facial, a massage, or even just a kind word at the front desk. That’s what we do. And we do it really well.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child, I thought I had to be quiet to keep the peace. I believed staying small made things easier for everyone else. But I’ve learned that shrinking doesn’t serve anyone. Leading a business, mentoring others, and showing up fully—even when it’s uncomfortable—has helped me unlearn that. You don’t have to be loud to be powerful, but you do have to be visible.
When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
After the fire, I didn’t have the luxury of hiding. Everything we’d built—gone overnight. There were moments I wanted to disappear. But I had a team looking to me, clients reaching out, and my own name on the wall. That’s when I realized: I could either let the pain shrink me… or I could let it shape me. I stopped pretending I had it all together and started leading from honesty. Owning the hard moments didn’t make me weak—it made me real. And that’s what brought people back. That’s what built trust all over again.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
One of the biggest lies in our industry is that people need to be “fixed.” That your skin, your body, your hair—none of it is good enough unless it’s being changed or corrected. That kind of messaging might sell products, but it chips away at people. At Bare Necessities, we don’t buy into that. We believe in taking care of yourself because you deserve to feel good—not because you’re flawed. You can want results and still love who you are right now. That’s the energy we protect, and it’s why our clients stay with us for years.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
If I retired tomorrow, I hope our clients would miss the feeling they get when they walk through our doors—like someone truly cares, like they matter. That didn’t happen by accident. I’ve always believed the experience should feel personal, never transactional. From the way we remember names to how we train our team, it’s all intentional. Clients know we’re different. They feel safe here, seen here. I hope that’s what they’d miss.
