Community Highlights: Meet Andrew Cheng

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrew Cheng.

Hi Andrew, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born and raised in Houston; in fact, I always tell people I was born in Sugar Land, raised in Alief. When I first started as a medicare insurance agent in 2007, I wanted to help my parents understand the Medicare options. Though when I made a space for myself, and as I became more knowledgeable in the industry, my parents would start to refer their friends to me. Because of this, I was able to realize that there was a need in our community for people turning 65 to help those that didn’t speak the English language. So I decided to gather a group of agents that also had communities that needed help navigating through Medicare here in Houston, so in 2017, I started my own agency known as Clutch City Insurance.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s really tough because there are so many brokers and captive agents for these insurance companies, and a lot of the times, there is a good amount of misinformation and aggressive sales agents that really only want to make that quick buck off their sales without actually finding a plan that suits the needs of their clients. So it’s really challenging to do right by our community when you have really aggressive sales agents in the field and navigating through them all to really help your clients.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Located in Southwest Houston, Clutch City Insurance is local to Houston residents and agents alike. Equipped with the knowledge of multiple insurance companies and no consultation fees, our retention for clients is over 90%! Our agents speak multiple languages and have years of experience in the field.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
Seniors are incredibly vulnerable during this time, and we have come to realize that it is hard when our clients don’t have family or friends in the area to help them navigate through these changes. Luckily, the insurance companies have pivoted to moving most everything to online remote and give us (the agents) the opportunity to help each client remotely.
