Community Highlights: Meet Anthony Vanegas of Sunbelt Pawn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony Vanegas.

Hi Anthony, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I’m Anthony, a pawnbroker and small business owner. My career in pawn began at the age of 12 when I walked into Top Dollar Pawn in Irving, Texas. I was with a group from my church in search of music equipment for the band and helped translate between my family and the shop owners. That’s when I was offered a job to help translate in the shop. That was the beginning of my career in pawn. The rest really is history and I’m happy to say I still keep in touch with the family that introduced me to the pawn industry after all these years.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My 30+ years in the pawn industry has been a journey – some seasons have been smoother than others. Looking back on that journey, the rougher seasons include when we opened our first Sunbelt Pawn location back in 2006. We had to grow our customer base, get them familiar with a new face, look, and way of doing business. Although it was challenging, it is very rewarding to still see many of our Day 1 customers in our stores today along with their children and grandchildren who are now our customers as well.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Sunbelt Pawn?
Sunbelt Pawn is a family owned, locally operated small business that has been blessed to grow from one humble location in The Heights area of Houston to twelve stores across Houston and Dallas/Fort Worth. Our main business is providing microloans while we also offering a sustainable retail alternative for the communities we serve.

We strive to rewrite the narrative of the pawn industry and do so by educating those unfamiliar with our industry on how pawnshops are a vital financial solution to the unbanked and underfinanced in our area.

We are proud to do so by providing the best customer service in the industry As a way of measuring this, we set the goal of each store reaching 1,000 Google Reviews. We are proud to say that as of now, 33% of our stores have hit this goal. In addition, we are proud to be at a place in business where we can give back and investing in our communities by offering our annual Seguir Adelante Scholarship to local high school students.

In addition to loaning out money, we also buy and sell a variety of items, even luxury goods. You truly never know what you’ll find at a pawnshop; therefore, we encourage you to stop by each chance you get!

How do you think about luck?
Personally, I don’t believe in luck. Drive, vision, determination, hard work and God’s favor are the biggest factors in my life and business.
