Today we’d like to introduce you to Bianca Wiggins.
Hi Bianca, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have been interested in the well-being of women and children for many years. Studying Pre-Med for four years, I knew the makings of the human body is what I loved. Since the age of five, I wanted to be a Pediatrician and give my parents the bragging rights to say, “Yes, my daughter is a doctor.” During my undergraduate years, I was no longer excited about being a Pediatrician, but I still wanted to help people. Changing my major to Clinical Health and Wellness was perfect for my plans. Once I switched over, I started to hear too many horrible stories about how black women and their children are constantly dying during childbirth. As a black woman, this really bothered me. I then found a new passion: helping black women and other women of color have healthy, enjoyable pregnancies and birthing experiences.
In 1999, my mother came to me with amazing news: she was pregnant and I was going to be a big sister to a baby girl, Taylor. I remember that I couldn’t wait for Taylor to come and was so excited about being a big sister. As vividly as I remember waiting for my sister to come, I remember my mother going to the hospital but not returning with her. Instead, she carried a small white box. That box contained my sister’s hair, footprints and handprints. My mom informed me that Taylor did not survive. Tailored Birthing Co. was created in 2020 and named in remembrance of Taylor. I decided that I would honor her name by helping women have healthy pregnancies and births, tailoring each experience to the client’s needs.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I just announced the business on the 24th of November 2020. I will not say it has been challenging or smooth. Anything worth having more than likely will not come easily. I work hard on networking and promoting the business. I am originally from Illinois and have been a Houston resident for four years now. I appreciate not having the access that I would have if I were home because it makes me believe in myself and gets me to speak to people I probably would not have contacted if I did not start the business. I am learning to sell myself.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Tailored Birthing Co is here to provide emotional, physical, and informational support for expecting families. Whether in the comfort of your home, a hospital, or a birthing center, TBC will be there to make sure both you and your newfound blessing are comfortable and at peace.
What does success mean to you?
In general, success to me means achieving goals I have put in place. When I think of success pertaining to being a birth worker, it means making sure mothers and their families can advocate for themselves. It also means making sure I can assist with reducing Maternal Mortality in minority communities.
