Community Highlights: Meet Candice Connell of Connell Homes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Candice Connell.

Hi Candice, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I graduated from the University of Houston with a degree in supply chain management and logistics. After graduation, I worked in the oil and gas field for about 10 years. During that time my husband owned his own construction company, and he would regularly pick my brain on certain aspects within his field. I started to take interest in some of his projects and I would occasionally go with him to his job sites. I really started to develop a love for architecture and design. I loved seeing a project come to life and quickly became interested in the field. During that time oil and gas were in a downturn and my husband suggested that I should think about starting my own business. He felt I would do great in the construction field given my background and interest. Shortly after, I decided to go for it! I created my LLC and I haven’t looked back since! It really has been an exciting ride so far!

Of course, all of this would not have been possible without my loving and supportive husband, Colt, and my 2 children Peyton (10) and Wylder (6 months).

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of the biggest obstacles we have come across in the last couple of years is the impact of COVID-19 on the construction industry. In our industry, there is a normal ebb-and-flow nature on material prices and availability, but COVID-19 severely impacted the lumber industry in a way we had never experienced before. Lumber prices increased by over 300% and there were major supply chain delays. We were able to overcome this by communicating with our customers about the ongoing situation, sourcing alternate materials and by leveraging our relationships with our local suppliers. In many instances, we were able to help mitigate cost increases to our clients by decreasing our builder’s commission.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Connell Homes is a residential construction company that takes on projects from custom outdoor living to full home renovations. While we do offer many services our specialty is in custom our door living. This includes outdoor kitchens, patios, fireplaces, pergolas, turf, outdoor bathrooms, pool houses and spas. The biggest thing that sets us apart from other construction companies is that we pride ourselves on communication! A project should be a fun and positive experience for our clients, but if there is a lack of communication it can negatively impact that experience.

Prior to starting Connell Homes, one thing that I noticed was common amongst contractors was the lack of communication. Every time I needed a project done is seemed to take several weeks to get a quote, subs were not showing up when expected, contractors did not communicate delays and they were not transparent on costs. It was a very frustrating experience as a customer and homeowner.

When Connell Homes was formed; I wanted not only to provide a quality service at an affordable price, but I wanted to create a positive and memorable experience for our clients. And one of the most important factors of a positive experience is proper and consistent communication throughout the life of a project.

Our passion for creating new spaces is reflected in the care and attention we devote to the process. From the initial consultation to the selection of the final details, our team will walk with you through the entire process and bring your vision to life!

At Connell Homes, we build products that we can stand behind!

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
One of my favorite childhood memories was working alongside my dad, who was an electrician, in the summers. Working with him really taught me the value of hard work and making sure to always take pride in what I do. Those experiences and lessons in my childhood have become a significant part of who I am today.
