Community Highlights: Meet Cecilia Villanueva of Estudio Azul Inc.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cecilia Villanueva.

Cecilia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My path to architecture was unconventional. While studying visual arts, I spent a decade working alongside my father at his firm—starting with interiors and libraries before moving into full residential design. That passion became a family legacy: my son, Luis, is now an architect, and my daughter, Fernanda, an architectural engineer. In our home, we eat, dream, and talk design.

After relocating to Houston in 2012, I spent years painting, teaching art, and joining Archway Gallery in 2015. In 2023, after becoming an American citizen, I founded Estudio Azul Inc.

Our motto is Architecture for Everyone. We are a collective of artists, architects, and engineers driven to improve lives through thoughtful design. We create intentional spaces that nurture safety, quiet reflection, and human connection—offering sanctuary from consumerism and building environments where creativity and joy can thrive.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey hasn’t been easy. During our first year, I worked hands-on with repairs and remodels. Laboring in the extreme heat grounded me, toughened my resolve, and taught me deep respect for every trade. It also gave me a firsthand masterclass in Houston’s construction systems.

Navigating a male-dominated field required finding my voice, communicating with clarity, and leading teams of men through earned trust rather than pretense. The rigorous road of entrepreneurship has ultimately shaped me into a stronger, more humble leader.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
At Estudio Azul Inc., we believe thoughtful design isn’t a luxury—it’s an essential part of living well.

We prioritize people over possessions. In tighter footprint projects, that might mean scaling back garage space to give families more room to actually live, create, and connect. Where space allows, we harness natural light, protective solid volumes, and transparent transitions that bring hidden gardens and surrounding nature indoors.

Every home we build features small, intentional details and integrated art designed to support the human experience—from quiet reading nooks to spaces that inspire reflection.

What sets us apart is our perspective: we design for the life that will unfold inside the walls. While architecture is our livelihood, our driving principle remains simple—to make exceptional, meaningful design accessible to everyone.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Become strong, brave, and resilient—and don’t be easily discouraged. Know yourself deeply, both your light and your shadows, and harness both to realize your vision.

You are your own most important project; external success naturally follows as you become capable of holding your own dreams. Be brutally honest with yourself and your process, stay kind, and never stop allowing yourself to dream big.
