Community Highlights: Meet Chris and Kandice Moore of Moore Vintage Co.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris and Kandice Moore.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Chris and I are the owners of Moore Vintage Co. We sell vintage furniture and home-goods.  We have 4 kids, Savannah (8), Kale (6), Sydney (4), and Kolton (1). We just moved to the Woodlands area and are excited to see how Moore Vintage Co. does there. Chris and I met at the University of Texas El Paso where we were both collegiate athletes. After graduating from college, we moved to Southern California, where I am from. We spent 5 years there working both full time and part time jobs. Three years into our stay in California Chris was diagnosed with a rare neuromuscular disease that made it difficult to work consistently. During that time we had two kids and were struggling to make ends meet.  We decided to move to Houston where it was more affordable and where Chris was born and raised.  I wasn’t always into shopping for vintage pieces. My grandma and mom used to take me to thrift stores a lot when I was young. I never really understood why they liked going and how they could be at the same store for so long. Then as I got older it all came full circle. I was the one going to thrift stores, searching and searching for vintage treasures. After we moved to Houston I was staying home with our kids and wanted to contribute more. I decided to start flipping furniture. I started off selling a couple things a month. As time went on I was selling more and more. By that time Chris was working a stressful 9-5 and it was affecting his health.  His disease has its good and bad days and the stress was causing most days to be bad. We decided it was time for him to quit and we would both start selling furniture. The flexibility and less stressful atmosphere made a huge difference for Chris’s health. We struggled a lot with our finances the first year but we kept our faith and never gave up. Each year we have grown and learned a lot. This little hobby of mine has become our dream job. We love being able to do something we are passionate about while having the flexibility to be with our kids as much as we can.  Our kids are our biggest priority and we love that this business allows us to be with them as much as possible.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The hardest thing we have faced would be starting from nothing. We didn’t have any financial assistance so we worked our way up selling one piece of furniture at a time. The money we would make would go straight towards more furniture to sell.
Another obstacle is running a business and raising 4 young children. Both of those things in themselves are very difficult and we do them both every single day. We still struggle at times with having enough time and knowing when to take a break. Having our own business is hard work but satisfying when you see your success.
