Community Highlights: Meet Dr. Christopher Marvin of Coastal Performance Chiropractic

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Christopher Marvin. They and their team shared their story with us below:

Christopher Marvin

Dr. Christopher “Marv” Marvin, DC, is a performance chiropractic clinician practicing in Seabrook, TX, specializing in nutrition, fitness, human performance, and rehabilitation.

Dr. Marvin has been involved in health, wellness, and fitness for over 16 years. He earned his BS in Exercise Science from Sonoma State University and his Doctorate of Chiropractic from Palmer College in San Jose, California as class valedictorian. Dr. Marv acquired extensive experience in the physical therapy space, as well as in the corporate gym environment, as a fitness coach and specialist. He owned and managed a private training studio specializing in one-to-one and online training. In addition to his exercise expertise, Dr. Marv has spent over a decade learning about evidence-based nutrition and supplementation strategies for both the general population and the elite athlete, culminating into writing a book on nutrition.

In his personal life, he has competed as a sprint triathlete before falling in love with bodybuilding and beach volleyball.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve had 9 surgeries, 7 by the time I was 18 years old, with the majority being done improperly or unnecessarily (I learned this much, much later). As a result, chronic pain has been a part of my life since the 6th grade, and I lived in my early 20s in fear of breaking my back again, so every time I would sneeze, I would be petrified, feeling like I needed to live in a bubble.

My whole life, I would follow a doctor’s recommendation to simply stop the sport/activity I was doing that I was in pain from. This meant first, I gave up soccer, then basketball, then triathlons. When yet another specialist told me to stop playing guitar (and lifting weights, again) (that was the final straw, and I decided to take matters into my own hands (I saw over 30 doctors/medical professionals for my bad wrist – 5 of which said I was making it up for attention). At the time, I had quit personal training (my first true love career-wise) and decided to see what chiropractic care could do for me. When I got results, I got a glimmer of light and once again got back to the training world and once again found my passion for work and helping others.

Several years later, I realized I didn’t want to spot people in my 40s and decided I wanted to go back to school. I always thought I wanted to be a physical therapist (my undergrad is in pre-physical therapy, and worked in a hospital PT clinic). But PT schools wanted me to re-do my entire undergrad just to apply (apparently, physiology had changed in the 10 years since I graduated). That’s when I realized chiropractic care helped me more than all the years of PT. I found a chiropractor who had a squat rack in his office and would have patients work during treatments, spending 20, 40, or even 60 minutes with each patient. I was fortunate in that he was willing to hop on the phone with me for almost 3 hours during our first chat and let me shadow him a few months later when I made the 12-hour drive up to his office. 3 months later, I started chiro school and found that I was always meant to be a performance chiropractor – that I had spent the previous decade-plus of my life before chiro school preparing for this career as I have been obsessed with the human body, exercise, nutrition, and biomechanics.

The Best Part?

You Don’t Have to be a World-Class Athlete to get World-Class Care.

From Olympians and professional athletes to weekend warriors and youth sports, the team at Coastal Performance Chiropractic offers a variety of treatments to maximize human performance.

You’ve made the decision to lead an active lifestyle but often times pain or stiffness gets in the way. Or maybe you can go for periods of time with no pain, and then the same old injuries tend to crop up again and again.

Sound familiar?

At our office, we don’t just manage the symptoms of your pain, we dig deep to determine the root cause and work with you on a treatment plan to correct the issue once and for all using state-of-the art, cutting edge technology and techniques based upon the latest research. And…we provide you with the exercises, stretches, and self-care routines that you can do at home to prevent re-injury (i.e., you want you coming into the office as infrequently as possible, which means we are a far cry from your traditional “rack ’em & crack ’em” office that asks you to come in 3x a week for a 5-minute visit replicating the same treatment that every patient gets no matter what their complaint is).
