Today we’d like to introduce you to Colin McKenzie.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Darin McKenzie graduated from Louisiana Tech in 1991 with a degree in accounting. He worked for 2 years for trinity industries and a small accounting firm. Looking to escape the 8 to 5 routine, in 1995 Darin and Kathy McKenzie sold there house in longview, TX and moved to Conroe to open McKenzie’s Barbeque & Burgers. It important to mention that during this time Kathy McKenzie was pregnant with thier first child, Colin McKenzie. McKenzie’s opened there doors on October 4, 1995. In 2009, a second location in Montgomery was opened. In 2018 after graduating from Louisiana Tech with a degree in Finance Colin joined the family business.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all. The restaurant business is a tough business and not for everyone. The early years were very tough being a new business with a young family, but though will and determination Darin McKenzie was able to stay open and grow it into a successful business.
We’ve been impressed with McKenzie’s Barbeque & Burgers, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Our vision is to be the favorite hometown Texas barbeque experience in the communities we serve. We offer breakfast, lunch, and dinner at our conroe location and lunch and dinner at our Montgomery location. Our Conroe location, features 2 private room great for rehearsal dinners, baby showers, Christmas parties, etc. We also offer catering services. Wether you are feeding 10 for an office luncheon, a few hundred at a wedding, or a large event feeding thousands our catering team in professional, efficient, and makes booking catering very easy for our clients.
What’s next?
We recently switched to prime briskets. We have attempted to make the switch before but have always ran into supply issues. We feel confident in our supplier to keep up with the demand and we are excited to be able to offer a premium product to our customers. We are always focused on improving our customers experience. The most recent feature we added was the new McKenzie’s Barbeque & Burgers app which makes ordering and keeping up with your loyalty rewards very easy. On the catering side, we recently added a food trailer which gives us the ability to sale food at a 3rd party sites. We currently are only offering to catering customers, but it gives customers another way to serve large groups of people.
