Today we’d like to introduce you to Contessa Galloway.
Hi Contessa, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
Hello, Contessa Galloway born and raised in Jasper, Texas moved to Houston in 1999 to pursue my career as a nurse. A God-fearing woman born and raised in church. I worked in the medical field for 9 years until me and my husband decided to open our own bar in 2009, and have been going ever since then. We started at a small club on McGregor for six years, and the business location got to packed, so we had to find another location after telling our landlord we will be moving into another location, they acted like they were happy; however, they terminated our contract a week later without our location secure our club was closed for 6 months, and it was a struggle with us having loyal customers and wanted to see us be successful money came rolling when we opened at our new location now that we own after 6 long years business is great and prospering. I’m a mom of 2, Ryheem Malone he was drafted into the Colts but got hurt ended up landing a position with XFL until Covid hit. He’s now going back into the football world after Covid he’s a serious entrepreneur like his mom he owns a 6-figure firework stand and own an 18-wheeler my daughter 16 she’s an all-star cheerleader and flips her life away and preparing for her college life. Me and my husband are both jaspers born. I was raised, but he was born and but raised in Houston, Texas we have been married since 2006. My new career as a real estate agent has been a new journey; I’m on for the last year it has been awesome journey, and excited for the future and buying my real estate property in Costa Rica and retiring if the lord same the same.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being an entrepreneur has not been easy, and still not you have to make a lot of sacrifices and you have to deal with a lot, but I wouldn’t change it for the world working for myself it has allowed me to attend all my kids’ sports and be there for them and that’s something my son could not do being a single mom with 4 kids.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next, you can tell us a bit more about your business.
I’m a female bar owner I employee over 25 people, and majority of my staff are females. I’m known as Mrs. Dreams or Boss Lady. I know 75% of my customers, and they have been with me since 2009, and I would not change the relationships I have encountered over the years my customers keep me going. I’m probably one of the only clubs that have made it over the 13-year mark with one owner, and most of my staff have been with me for 10 years. I’m probably one of the only bars that offer my employees 401k and health benefits because some of my employees this is their career, and they make a good living from it.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk-taking.
For me to open my new location, I literally had to empty out every account that I owned, including my 401k. I had to borrow money because my plan was to continue my business at one location and help that pay for another one, but when we had to close one club all our income, of course, stopped all our income that was saved had to be used to open this club our home went into foreclosure one of our vehicles got repossessed at the time we have 4 kids at home my husband has 4 kids and 3 of them stayed with us his mom helped us through this process with this kids until we opened.
